Valero Rivera López (born February 14, 1953 in Saragossa ) is a Spanish handball coach and former handball player . Rivera is considered the most successful club coach in the world.

Career

Valero Rivera dedicated his entire handball career to FC Barcelona . As a youth, Rivera played in the club from the 1966/67 season. For the 1971/72 season he made his debut as a player in the Barca first team . He was elected team captain and remained so for the next eleven years. Rivera won a number of national titles with FC Barcelona. In 1980 he received a bachelor's degree in sport from the Instituto Nacional de Educación Física de Cataluña (INEFC). In 1983 he ended his active career at the age of only 31. In the same year he was appointed coach by then club president Josep Lluís Núñez as the successor to Jordi Petit . Rivera held this position for the next 21 years and became the most successful handball coach in the world during this time. The team won around 70 titles, including six Champions League successes, under his direction. Veselin Vujović , Iñaki Urdangarin and Rafael Guijosa played under Rivera . At the end of the 2004/05 season he ended his career as a handball coach and became a player's agent. From December 15, 2008 Rivera was the coach of the Spanish men's handball team . In 2013 he won the World Cup with her in his own country. He then took over the Qatar national handball team , with whom he 2014 Asian Cup won.

Rivera is married to Isabel Martinez. He has two children with her (Cristina and Valero). His son Valero (* 1985) is also a handball player who plays for FC Barcelona and the Spanish national team.
