Josep Lluís Núñez i Clemente (born September 7, 1931 in Barakaldo , Basque Country , † December 3, 2018 in Barcelona ) was a Spanish football official . He was president of FC Barcelona between 1978 and 2000 .

Life

Núñez came from Barakaldo in the Basque Country and was born in 1931 as José Luis Nunez Clemente. After Franco's death, he had his name Catalan.

Núñez initially made a name for himself as a building contractor with the company Núñez i Navarro , the name Navarro coming from Núñez's wife. In 1978 he ran for the office of president of the Spanish club FC Barcelona and was elected to the office on July 1 of that year; Núñez received 10,352 votes (39.38%).

Núñez wanted to transform Barça into a successful sports and business company. During his tenure, the Mini Estadi was opened in 1982 and the FC Barcelona Museu in 1984 , the Palau Blaugrana was expanded and the Masia , the home for young players, was established. In addition, the club won during his tenure in the four main professional departments, in addition to football (30 titles) handball (65 titles), basketball (36 titles) and roller hockey (45 titles) 176 championships and titles. In 1999 the Spanish championship was won in all four departments.

Another success under his aegis was the membership increase from 77,900 to 106,000 followers. He was re-elected several times without an opponent, and in 1988 he had to contend with resistance from football players. They were all fired, only the goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta remained with the club. With Johan Cruyff's subsequent engagement , a successful era was heralded. In 1992 the UEFA Champions League (back then still as the European Cup of National Champions) was won for the first time . After Núñez had fallen out with the coach and had less successful times with Bobby Robson and Louis van Gaal , he was confronted with an opposition that drove him out of office in 2000. In the presidential election in 2000, which Joan Gaspart won, he did not run again. After that, Núñez withdrew from public life.

In late July 2011, Núñez was sentenced to six years in prison by the Barcelona Supreme Court . The court found the ex-president of FC Barcelona guilty of bribery and falsification of documents according to the indictment. Núñez, along with his son, is said to have bribed tax advisors and investigators in the late 1990s to avoid charges of tax evasion.

Núñez died in December 2018 at the age of 87.
