Patrick Wiencek (born March 22, 1989 in Duisburg ) is a German handball player . He plays for the German record champions THW Kiel and in the German national team. He was voted handball player of the year in 2018 .

Career

society

In his youth, Wiencek played for MSV Duisburg , HSG Düsseldorf and Bergische HC . During his time at HSG Düsseldorf, the circle runner already gained match practice with the HSG reserve in the Oberliga Niederrhein. In 2008 he moved to Bundesliga club TUSEM Essen , where he signed a two-year contract. In addition, Wiencek got a second game right for the top division TV Jahn Hiesfeld . Due to the personal situation at TUSEM Essen, Patrick Wiencek was only used for TUSEM.

For the 2010/11 season, the national player moved to VfL Gummersbach in the 1st handball league, where he replaced Róbert Gunnarsson who had migrated alongside Igor Anic . With Gummersbach he won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 2011 . In summer 2012 he moved to THW Kiel , with whom he won the DHB Cup in 2013 , 2017 and 2019 , the German championship in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2020 and the EHF Cup in 2019 . On October 3, 2015, Wiencek suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament in the Champions League game against SG Flensburg-Handewitt .

National team

Due to his good performance in the 2008/09 season for TUSEM Essen, Wiencek was appointed to the junior national team for the first time. With the junior selection he won the world championship in 2009. On December 1, 2009 he made his international debut against Belarus . Since then he has been a member of the men's national team .

The 2012 European Handball Championship was Wiencek's first major tournament with the national team. He was also in the national team at the 2013 World Cup and scored 19 goals in seven games.

After missing the 2016 European Championship due to injury, he won the bronze medal with the German team at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . For this he received the silver bay leaf on November 1, 2016 . On January 18, 2017, he completed his 100th international match for the national team in the World Cup game against Belarus. For the European Championship 2018 he was appointed by national coach Christian Prokop in the 20-man squad, who denies the preparation. On January 7th, he was appointed to the final 16-man squad and thus took part in the EM 2018. He has played 144 games so far in which he scored 292 goals.

Private

After leaving school, he trained as a system mechanic. He has two children (* 2014 and 2018).

His younger brother David Wiencek plays in the 3rd division at Ahlener SG .
