Joan Cañellas Reixach , short Joan Cañellas (born September 30, 1986 in Santa Maria de Palautordera , province of Barcelona ) is a Spanish handball player . The 1.98 meter tall and 95 kilogram back player has been under contract with Pick Szeged since 2018 .

Career

Cañellas played for BM Granollers from 2004 to 2005 , for FC Barcelona from 2005 to 2008 and again for BM Granollers from 2008 to 2009. He then ran for BM Ciudad Real and Atlético Madrid . In June 2013, his move to the German Bundesliga club HSV Hamburg for the 2014/15 season was announced. Since Atlético Madrid had to withdraw from the game shortly afterwards due to financial problems, Cañellas joined HSV Hamburg in July 2013. On July 1, 2014, he signed a three-year contract with THW Kiel after making use of an exit clause in his contract with HSV Hamburg. In February 2016 it was announced that the contract with the THW would be prematurely terminated and Cañellas will be moving to the Macedonian club RK Vardar Skopje for the 2016/17 season. He has been under contract with the Hungarian club Pick Szeged since summer 2018 .

With these clubs he played in the EHF Cup (2004/05) and in the EHF Champions League (since 2005/06).

With the Spanish national team , Joan Cañellas Reixach was third at the 2011 World Cup and World Champion in 2013 . At the 2014 European Championship , he led his team to bronze as the tournament's top scorer with 50 goals. In 2018 and 2020 he was European champion with the Spanish team .
