Europe

Europe has 14 participants in the World Cup. Spain as hosts and France as defending world champions are automatically qualified . The three best teams of the European Championship 2012 qualify directly . Since Spain had already qualified as hosts, Serbia, Croatia and the eventual European champions Denmark were already certain to participate in the World Cup before the semi-finals.

Qualification groups

The teams not represented at the European Championship competed in a qualifying round from November 2, 2011 to January 15, 2012 in group matches. The seven group winners and the teams that did not qualify for the European Championship then play the nine other European teams in a play-off round.
