The 6th men's handball world championship took place in Sweden from January 12 to 21, 1967 . A total of 16 teams competed . Czechoslovakia became world champions and beat Denmark 14:11 in the final . The team from the Federal Republic of Germany ended up in sixth place, the GDR was eliminated in the preliminary round.

In the preliminary round, the teams competed in four groups with four teams each. The two best placed in each group qualified for the main round, the third and fourth placed were eliminated.

The two best-placed teams in each group reached the main round, which was held as the quarter-finals. The teams from groups A and D or B and C played against each other in cross-over games (second in one group against winners in the other group). The respective winners reached the semi-finals, the losers played in the placement round for places 5 to 8.
