Peter Rost (born June 29, 1951 in Leipzig ) is a German handball player , trainer and official . His greatest success was winning the Olympic gold medal as captain and playmaker of the GDR team in 1980 in Moscow .
Career
In his youth, Rost played at the BSG Leipzig Südwest and was Spartakiadeieger in 1966 with the Leipzig district selection. He was also GDR youth champion in 1970 with SC Leipzig . He played for SC Leipzig from 1970 to 1984 and was East German champion in 1972, 1976 and 1979.
In total, Peter Rost was used 216 times internationally in the GDR team , scoring 339 goals. At the handball world championship in 1974 he was vice world champion and 1980 Olympic champion, both as captain of the selection. For his sporting successes he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in 1980 in silver and in 1984 in gold.
In 1984 he was voted handball player of the year .
As a trainer he was responsible for the women of the Frankfurt handball club , the men of SC Magdeburg (1999) and ThSV Eisenach (2001-2003). He then worked as a consultant for HC Dresden; In 2006 he was the sports manager of 1. SV Concordia Delitzsch .
Private
Rost is a trained locomotive fitter and graduated from school with a university entrance qualification . He then studied at the DHfK Leipzig . He is also a qualified sports teacher .
He is married to Christina "Christa" Rost , who was 170 times selected player of the GDR handball world champion and won Olympic silver in Montréal in 1976 and bronze four years later. Their son Frank was a soccer goalkeeper and is now a soccer coach . Peter Rost lives in Leipzig.
