The 29th GDR champions were determined with the men's handball league in 1978/79 , the top division in indoor handball in the GDR .

Season course

The league season 1978/79 began on September 30, 1978 and ended on March 11, 1979 with the 20th game day. Ten teams took part, each of which competed against each other in home and return matches and thus had to play 18 matches. Among them were the two climbers BSG Motor Eisenach and BSG Chemie Premnitz . Both company sports associations had already played in the top league in the past. Only Motor Eisenach managed to stay in the league, while Chemie Premnitz had to relegate together with the long-established BSG ZAB Dessau . Last year's champion SC Empor Rostock could not defend its title and only landed on 5th place. The new handball champion of the GDR was SC Leipzig , which won its third championship title in the men after 1972 and 1976.
