The handball GDR championship in 1958 was only limited to this calendar year, because because of the preparation for the indoor handball world championship, which took place in the GDR in February / March 1958, the point games of the men's handball league were canceled and the point games the women's league was only held at the beginning of 1958. The field handball championships for men and women took place as planned from April to October 1958.

Indoor championship (women)

The indoor championship for women took place in January and February with twelve teams in two seasons. The individual game rounds were played in tournament form in neutral sports halls. After completing the point games, the season winners contested the championship final. The bottom of the table had to relegate.

The final of the GDR championship in indoor handball for women took place on February 1, 1958 in the East Berlin Dynamo sports hall .

SC Progress Weißenfels - BSG Lokomotive Rangsdorf 6: 1 (1: 1)

The outsider Lok Rangsdorf was able to wrest a 1-1 draw from defending champion progress Weißenfels with a seven meter goal until half-time. Until then, the defensive lines of both teams had determined the game, but after the break, the Rangsdorf women lost their concentration in defensive work. They didn't hit the goal either, while on the other side the Weißenfelser women still managed to win.

Field Championship (Men)

To determine the GDR master in field handball, 16 teams competed in two seasons in the GDR Oberliga. With the SC DHfK Leipzig and the BSG Chemie Piesteritz two newcomers were in the field, the two bottom of the table had to relegate. The defending champion was SC Dynamo Berlin. The two season winners played the new title holder in the championship final.

Endgame

The final of the men's field handball championship was played on October 12, 1958 in Halle's Kurt Wabbel Stadium in front of 9,000 spectators.

BSG Motor Eisenach - SC Empor Rostock 13:11 (6: 6)

The championship final ended with a big big surprise, because not the favorite from Rostock, but the company sports association Motor Eisenach left the field as the winner. In pouring rain, the Thuringians got along better with the smooth turf, and they managed to overcome the Rostock defense with consistent wing play. The 34-year-old former national player Werner Assmann played a decisive role in this , tirelessly pushing his team forward. For a long time the game was balanced, at half time it was a draw. SC Empor was in the front several times, but Eisenach Erhardt and Singwald scored the winning goals in the final phase.

In the final, the handball players from SC Progress Weissenfels successfully defended their previous year's title. The decisive factors were their superior throwing power and the better interaction. Lok Rangsdorf could only keep up until the interim 2: 2, at the break Weißenfels was already clearly in the front with 5: 2. In the end, this lead was never given up. The outstanding player was Inge Schanding from Weißenfels with her five goals.
