The GDR championship was determined for the 35th time with the men's handball league in 1984/85 , the top division of the season in indoor handball in the GDR .

Season course

The league was played in the 1984/85 season from October 17, 1984 to May 15, 1985 with ten teams as usual. These had to complete 18 matches each in home and return matches. The SC Magdeburg succeeded in defending a six-point lead last year's title. It was his sixth title win in a row and the eighth indoor championship since 1977 . The best company sports association was BSG Motor Eisenach in sixth place, nine points behind the fifth place in the table, SC Leipzig . The Army Sports Association (ASG), the Löbau Officers' College and the SG Lok / Motor Süd-Ost Magdeburg game community started as promoters from the handball GDR league . Both communities failed to stay in the league and were relegated to second class after only one year.
