Handball GDR Oberliga (men) 1979/80

The GDR championship was determined for the 30th time with the men's handball league in 1979/80 , the top division in indoor handball in the GDR .

Season course

After a head-to-head race with SC Empor Rostock , SC Magdeburg became GDR champions for the third time after 1970 and 1977, while the defending champions SC Leipzig only reached fourth place. The league season 1979/80 was played with ten teams in a double round with home and away legs. It began on September 15, 1979 and was completed with the 20th match day on February 17, 1980. While the BSG Post Schwerin was able to place itself in fifth place as the best company sports club , the three-time champions SC Dynamo Berlin only ended up in seventh place. He was still one place behind the promoted SG Dynamo Halle-Neustadt . The second newcomer BSG Rotation Prenzlauer Berg from East Berlin was bottom of the table and had to relegate again.
