Season course

The league season began on September 16, 1987 and ended with the 18th matchday on April 2, 1988. The ten teams involved competed against each other in home and away games, alternating between home and away. The new GDR champion was SC Magdeburg , which was the title holder in indoor handball for the ninth time. The championship was exciting until the end, as four teams were still able to win the championship title on the last day of the match. Magdeburg with the best starting position, secured the title with a victory in Leipzig. The teams from ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt and Dynamo Berlin with the same number of points followed , where the games decided against each other about the final placement. Although only three points behind the leader, the defending champion SC Empor Rostock was only fourth. This was mainly due to the weak defense, which had the third worst record in the league with the 402 goals conceded. Again, the five participating sports clubs occupied the front of the table, followed by Motor Eisenach, the best company sports association , in sixth place . Since the league was increased to twelve teams in the 1988/89 season, there was no direct relegation in 1988. The bottom of the table, the BSG SVKE Britz played in a qualifying round with the runners-up of the two GDR league seasons for the last free place in the upper house. In this Britz took third place and after a year descended into the second class.
