Handball GDR Oberliga (men) 1963/64

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The handball GDR Oberliga 1963/64 was played both in the hall and on the field with 20 teams each. There were double rounds of points in two so-called Oberliga seasons, the season winners determined the champions in the indoor and field finals. The ASK forward Berlin won both finals. Since from the 1964/65 season only a single-track league was played, only the five first in the season qualified for the 1964/65 championship.

ASK Vorwärts Berlin - SC DHfK Leipzig 18:15

The four-time indoor champion SC DHfK went into his sixth final as a favorite. There he met an army club that played soberly but effectively. With Klaus Müller, he had the most accurate player in the game and Waldemar Pappusch, a goal-scorer who could not be hired. Although the DHfK players knew how to please with their blindly played combinations, they did not succeed with their long-range throws. Goalkeeper Bodo Fischer turned out to be the weak point of the Leipzig team, he could not cope with throws from acute angles, he did not reach his teammates with his steep passes. The ASK was in the lead until one minute before the half-time whistle, before the SC DHfK even managed to equalize in the last second. When the SC surprisingly took the lead after the restart, the ASK players could not be disturbed and played a supposedly safe 13: 9 lead up to the 40th minute. After that, the ASK got tangled up for a short time in ineffective speed play, which allowed the Leipzigers to hit the next goal in the 51st minute. In the now emerging drama, the army players kept their heads up, found their marksmanship again and at times retreated to four goals. In the final phase, the SC DHfK tried to cover the man, but their own attackers could no longer assert themselves against the ASK defense.

ASK forward Berlin - SC DHfK Leipzig 12: 6

In the repetition of the indoor final, the Army Sports Club prevailed again. Despite the constant rain, a playfully appealing finale developed. While the DHfK played their game like a chessboard, designed by Hannes Eichhorn and Klaus Langhoff, the ASK tried to achieve success with flying combinations. Both teams initially played on the same level, and the first half consequently ended 6: 6 in a draw. At the beginning of the second half of the game, the ASK used individual mistakes of the opponent to quickly pull it to 8: 6. While the Leipzig players could no longer cope with the difficult ground conditions and physically degraded more and more, the ASK won more and more games. Halfway through the second half, the army club was 10: 6 in the front and put up two more points until the final whistle, while the Leipzigers failed to score in the entire second half of the game.
