Men

Field handball

The field handball master 1952/53 was determined with the Oberliga field handball. Thirteen teams took part in the league, in which a double league round was played. For political reasons, the BSG Motor Friedrichshain-Ost , which had previously been represented in the overall Berlin handball league, was incorporated into the GDR Oberliga as the 13th team. After the point games were over, the company sports association (BSG) Stahl Calbe was at the top of the league and became the new field handball champion.

German sports echo of February 9, 1953: “The highlight of the evening was the eagerly awaited argument between the old GDR champion VP Halle, who was only able to play his way through to the final in the morning, with the team from Motor Rostock, who played in had demonstrated a high level of play recently. Motor Rostock showed a truly masterful form against VP Halle. Against the whirling attacks of the Rostockers, VP Halle could never find the right attitude with his man marking. On the other hand, the attentive cover of the Motor-Elf, in the club with the surpassing goalkeeper Hinrichs, thwarted decisive goals for the old master. “
BSG Motor used the following players during the season: Hans-Jürgen Hinrichs (goal), Hermann Dowe, Heinz Flach, Rudolf Herhaus, Gert Langhoff, Klaus-Dieter Matz, Günter Mundt, Günter Quednau and Paul-Friedrich Reder .

While the press attested the “high school” of indoor handball to the men's tournament, they complained that the women were disappointed. The Leipzig women owed their title win primarily to the great game of their goalkeeper Anni Transchel. ( Neue Zeit , February 10, 1953, p. 3)

Field handball

On September 20, 1953, when the women's indoor handball season had already started, the GDR women's field handball championship was concluded. In the final, the defending champions of BSG Einheit Weimar defeated BSG Motor West Leipzig 6: 4.
