The men's handball GDR Oberliga 1980/81 was the top division of the season in indoor handball in the GDR , with it the GDR champions were determined for the 31st time.

Season course

The league began on October 11, 1980 and was completed with the 20th match day on March 8, 1981. The SC Magdeburg was able to successfully defend his title from last year and achieved by 1970 , 1977 and 1980 his fourth indoor championship. With the SC Magdeburg (15 ×) and the SC Empor Rostock (5 ×) there were only two championship leaders during the season. On the 9th matchday there was the match with 57 goals between SC Leipzig and SG Dynamo Halle-Neustadt at 35:22 the highest goal game. While the newcomer BSG Einheit Halle-Neustadt had to relegate from the league as bottom of the table, the penultimate BSG Chemie Premnitz benefited from the renunciation of the BSG Rotation Prenzlauer Berg on the rise from the handball GDR league.
