Handball GDR Oberliga (men) 1973/74

The men's handball GDR league was 1973/74, the highest indoor handball league in the GDR with the national indoor handball champions was determined.

Season course

Before the start of the 1973/74 season, the GDR handball association had decided that three rounds of points would be played in the handball league. In the first round, all teams should compete on neutral ground, followed by the usual home and return games. 1973/74 again ten teams took part, each of which had to play 27 games. The defending champion was SC Empor Rostock , which however lost its title to the army sports club ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt . The handball soldiers won 21 out of the 27 league games, drew four times and lost twice. Rostock only ended up in third place, behind SC Magdeburg . In the league field there were neither promoted nor relegated teams, as the teams in question were able to assert themselves in the relegation round against the relay winners of the GDR league.

In the three rounds of the season, a total of 135 games were played, in which 4,789 goals were scored. With 576 goals, SC Magdeburg scored the most goals, the fewest goals were conceded by Post Schwerin, fifth in the table (443). The weakest defense was at the bottom of Motor Eisenach, who conceded 570 goals. Eisenach was also involved in the highest-scoring game of the season, in the home game against Empor Rostock there was a 25:27 defeat. The highest league victory was also at the expense of Motor Eisenach: BSG Post Schwerin won at home with 24:10.
