Season course
From the 1988/89 season on, the GDR Oberliga was operated with twelve teams. Since there had only been one relegated team in the previous season, the remaining nine teams were supplemented by three promoted teams from the second-rate GDR league . Two teams had to be relegated at the end of the season, the two newcomers Lokomotive RAW Cottbus and the Lok / Motor Süd-Ost Magdeburg syndicate . After fourteen years, the army handball players from ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt won the indoor championship title for the fourth time. They owed this mainly to their defense, which, like fourth place in the table, SC Leipzig, only conceded 427 goals. The defending champion SC Magdeburg came in second. With 564: 462 he had the best goal difference in the league, but two points less than the new title holder. The Magdeburg team gave away the two points in the last game of the season in the 23:24 away defeat in Frankfurt (Oder) . After the usual five-man sports club , Motor Eisenach was again the best company sports club , as in the previous year . The BSG teams won 27 points from the sports clubs (≈ 19%). Such a yield has never been seen in relation to the previous field of ten. In places five and six as well as ten and eleven, the teams had reached the same number of points; the games against each other decide on the final placement.
