Handball was the trade journal for the sport of handball in the GDR and was initially published as the "specialist body of the Presidium of the Handball Section of the GDR". With the founding of the German Handball Association , the latter took over the publishing house.

The publication was first published in 1953 by Sportverlag Berlin and originally emerged from the magazine Leichtathletik - Handball from the same publisher. Until 1961, handball appeared weekly with the layout of a sports newspaper, but from 1962 onwards as a monthly newsletter of the DHV with a volume of 8 to 24 (mostly 12 or 16) pages. Since then handball has had almost no journalistic elements in the sense of a reporting magazine, but has had the character of a pure communication organ of the association, in which information was mainly provided about planning and administrative processes in the association. Match reports or background reports can only be found sporadically, v. a. to international tournaments. The information on events in the national leagues is limited to the transmission of monthly table statuses and annual results overviews of the Oberliga. The publication was discontinued in 1990 with issue 9 and the magazine went into the handball magazine of the Philippka-Sportverlag , which was attached to the former association area of the DHV until the end of 1992 in each issue with the title "Regional Ost".
