Season course

In the 1972/73 season the game was played again with ten teams, each of which had to complete 18 point games. There were no promoters, as the two bottom of the table had prevailed in the relegation round against the GDR league relay winners. Last year's champions SC Leipzig only finished fourth and was replaced by SC Empor Rostock, who won their fourth indoor title. In places 7 - 9, three teams had reached the same number of points, so the final order had to be determined by a simple placement round.
