Handball GDR Oberliga (men) 1977/78

The 28th GDR champions were determined with the men's handball league in 1977/78 , the top division in indoor handball in the GDR .

Season course

For the 1977/78 season, the GDR handball association returned to the mode of the simple double round with home and away games. The league games began on October 8, 1977 and were completed on March 26, 1978. The GDR champion changed again, last year's champion SC Magdeburg was only second and was replaced by SC Empor Rostock , who won his fifth indoor title. The newcomers were SG Dynamo Halle-Neustadt and BSG Rotation Prenzlauer Berg . For SG Dynamo it was already the 13th season since the introduction of the highest indoor handball division, while the East Berlin BSG Rotation Prenzlauer Berg competed in the major league for the first time. Both climbers did not make it through the league.

After the major league had returned to the simple double-round mode in the 1977/78 season, only 90 matches were played compared to the previous season with 130 games. 3,771 goals were scored. The game with the most goals was the match between SC Magdeburg and BSG ZAB Dessau with 39:24 goals. SC Magdeburg celebrated the highest win of the day with a 36:18 home win over Post Schwerin. Klaus Gruner from ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt was the top scorer with 139 goals.
