Helmut Wilk (handball player)
Helmut Wilk (born August 23, 1955 in Rostock ) is a German handball trainer and former handball player.
He began as a track and field athlete in high and long jump as well as hurdles and took part in the GDR school championship in 1968.
After switching to handball, he played at SC Empor Rostock and was temporarily their team captain. With the SC Empor Rostock he was GDR champion in 1978 and took part in the final of the 1978/1979 European Cup.
Wilk, who is 1.88 meters tall and weighs 88 kilograms when he was active, was part of the handball national team of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) 35 times and scored 30 goals. He played his first international game in Trnava in 1978 against the Polish national team . He won the bronze medal with the GDR national team at the 9th World Cup in Denmark .
After his career as a handball player, Helmut Wilk became a trainer at Empor Rostock and SV Fortuna '50 Neubrandenburg .
He is married and has a son ( André Wilk ) with his wife Regina , who also plays handball.
