In the handball GDR League of Men won in the season 1988/89 , the BSG Chemie Piesteritz the season North and rose after 1982 for the second time in the Handball DDR Oberliga on. From the season south, the HG 85 Koethen, as an absolute newcomer, made it into the upper house.

North season

The BSG Chemie Piesteritz secured the relay victory with one point ahead of the BSG ZAB Dessau and rose for the second time after 1982 in the handball GDR league . As relegated from the league, the BSG SVKE Britz finished fifth. Of the three newcomers from the handball GDR district league, the SG Dynamo “Dr. Kurt Fischer “Berlin and the secondary agency of Post Schwerin hold the class. Schwerin had to go into the relegation against the southern representative Motor Hermsdorf as tenth in the table and was able to make it victorious. In terms of sport, the second team from Lokomotive RAW Cottbus was relegated to third class after just one year as the penultimate. Even if they had been relegated, they would have been downgraded to the district league by the relegation of the first team from the upper house. Cottbus was accompanied by the company sports association (BSG) EAW Treptow after a two-year guest appearance.

Season south

The HG 85 Koethen won the southern season with aplomb and was promoted to the handball league of the GDR as an absolute novice . The second representation of Wismut Aue and TSG Calbe took on as a climber from the handball GDR district league . Both teams failed to stay in the league and were relegated to the third division after only one year. Both were accompanied by Motor Hermsdorf , who lost out to the second representative of Post Schwerin in the relegation against the northern representative .
