The HG 85 Köthen is in Köthen -based German Handball Association .

The association was founded on April 29, 1985. The association was supported by the agricultural production cooperatives (LPG) . The founding team consisted of players from the Köthen University of Education , BSG Motor Köthen and Einheit Halle Neustadt. Later on, players from the clubs SC Magdeburg , Dynamo Halle , SC Leipzig and ZAB Dessau also came to HG 85. Initially only played in the men's and youth area, HG 85 took over the players from Lok Köthen in 1987.

The first men's team rose to the GDR League (South) in the first year. In the 1989/1990 season the club played in the GDR Oberliga , in the 1991/1992 and 1992/1993 seasons in the 2nd Bundesliga, season center . The HG has been playing in the regional league since 1996, and in 2010 they qualified for the newly created 3rd league , from which the club was relegated at the end of the 2010/11 season. In 2014 he was promoted to the third division as the master of the handball league in Central Germany . However, relegation to the league followed after the 2014/15 season .

The club's venue is the Heinz-Fricke-Sports Hall (500 seats, 350 standing places).
