history

The USV Potsdam after winning the Regionalliga 2015

In 1963, a rugby department was founded at what was then the Potsdam University of Education. This later moved to SG Dynamo Potsdam and played in the Oberliga, the top division of the GDR , where it developed into a top team. The team was runner-up six times (1971, 1976, 1983, 1984, 1986 and 1987) and third twice (1978 and 1979). However, the Potsdam team never managed to win the championship. The club's greatest success was winning the cup in 1975. In the final on June 22nd in Berlin they beat BSG Stahl Leegebruch 23:11. Furthermore, the club was twice in the final for the Cup of the German Rugby Sports Association (1979 and 1987), but lost both games against BSG Stahl Hennigsdorf . During the league years a total of 27 SG Dynamo Potsdam players were appointed to the squad of the GDR national team. They came together on 175 missions.

In 1988, sports students at the University of Education founded the RG 88, which after the political change and the dissolution of the GDR joined the Potsdam Police Sports Club , the former SG Dynamo. PSV's venue was the Ernst-Thälmann-Stadion , which is centrally located in the city and has since been demolished . In 1993 Potsdam was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga North for the first time. However, you could only hold one season in this division.

In 1997 the club became regional league champions and was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga for the second time in its history. Furthermore, the rugby department moved from the police sports club to the USV Potsdam and, as part of this change, moved from the Thälmannstadion to the university's sports facility at the Neue Palais . After only one year in the 2nd Bundesliga, he was immediately relegated to the Regionalliga Ost. There followed seven seasons in the third division, in which one was always one of the favorites and was traded as a contender for promotion, but always failed again and again. In the 2005 season Potsdam was finally able to prevail and win the decisive game for promotion against Hamburger RC and thus achieve the third and so far last promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga. In terms of sport, the following season was only modest and the USV could not assert itself in its third season in league two as the penultimate. However, one benefited from the removal of the SV Stahl Hennigsdorf team in 1948 from traffic. So one escaped a third relegation. In the following years Potsdam improved and had nothing to do with a possible relegation. Rather, the USV established itself more and more and became a permanent fixture and top team of the 2nd Bundesliga North. The most successful season was 2009/2010, when they finished second and just missed promotion to the 1st Bundesliga , just two points behind .

After a comprehensive reform of the league system in 2012, USV Potsdam was promoted to the 1st Bundesliga for the first time and has therefore been first class again since the end of the GDR Oberliga. In terms of sport, you could assert yourself in the first season. In the preliminary round you reached 3rd place in the East relay and qualified for the North / East championship round, which you completed in 6th place. In the round of 16 for the German championship, Potsdam renounced the game against TV Pforzheim and was eliminated. The second team played in the 2012/13 season in a syndicate with RC Berlin "Grizzlies" in the 2nd Bundesliga East. However, this syndicate was ended after this season. The second season in the 1st Bundesliga was less successful due to the tense personnel situation. In the preliminary round they came in sixth and last place in the eastern relay and could therefore not qualify for the championship round. You competed in the DRV-Pokal, where you came fifth out of eight places in the north / east group. The qualifying game for the quarter-finals was won in Munich at the RFC, but the subsequent quarter-finals at RC Leipzig were clearly lost.

Following the 2013/14 season, the USV withdrew from the national leagues for the following season due to worsening personnel problems. In 2014/15, after nine seasons, the team played again in the third-class Regionalliga North / East, but managed to get promoted back to the 2nd Bundesliga after just one season. The UPS trainers are Robby Lehmann and Frank Pilger .

In 2019, the women of the UPS could Potsdam in the German Championships in 7-Rugby the bronze medal win. The final tournament took place in Karlsruhe . In the decisive game for third place, the Potsdam women beat the SC Neuenheim team 19: 5.

Students from the university and other universities in the city take part in the German University Championships. In 2001, 2002 and 2019 the men were able to achieve the title of German university champion in rugby seven and came second several times. In the women’s category, the Potsdam women won the championship title three times.
