The rugby Bundesliga is the top division in German rugby union sport. It was introduced on September 18, 1971 under the auspices of the German Rugby Association .
The league is mainly run by amateurs. However, some teams play in a professional setting.
The 1st Bundesliga is divided into two seasons (north / east and south / west) with a total of 16 teams.
Directly below the 1st Bundesliga is the 2nd Bundesliga with four seasons (north, east, south and west) for a total of 32 teams.
history
Beginnings
On September 18, 1971, the first game day of the two-part First Bundesliga was played, which consisted of a North relay with six and a South relay with ten teams. At the same time, the German championship held since 1909 in modern league operations was continued.
- The North relay started with the clubs SV Odin Hannover , SV 08 Ricklingen , DSV 1878 Hannover and TSV Victoria Linden (all from Hannover ), SC Siemensstadt (Berlin) and FC Sankt Pauli (Hamburg).
- The season south began with the clubs SC Neuenheim , RG Heidelberg , Heidelberger RK , Heidelberger TV , TSV Handschuhsheim (all from Heidelberg ), RC Hürth , Bonner SC , ASV Cologne (all from the greater Cologne area ), SC 1880 Frankfurt and SG Eintracht Frankfurt .
A few years later, both squadrons consisted of eight clubs each, of which all the remaining clubs in the north season came from Hanover after the relegation of SC Siemensstadt (1974) and FC Sankt Pauli (1975). Sometimes one could therefore hear the derogatory word "Tram League". In addition, five out of eight clubs in the South season came from Heidelberg. This enormously one-sided distribution of German clubs in the First Bundesliga, which was caused by regionally bundled traditions in rugby , was only partially reversed towards the end of the 1970s when clubs from other cities were added by Hamburger SV (1978) and Berliner RC (1980) bumped.
Restructuring after the turnaround
After the political upheavals at the end of the 1980s, the accession of the state associations Brandenburg and Saxony and the associated clubs from the GDR , there was a new division into the seasons north / east and south / west, as well as temporarily a single-track game operation with eight clubs . In the mid-1990s, two groups of six clubs each played in the North / East and South / West seasons. The top three winners then played a round of six, the first in the table made it to the finals to win the title of German champions .
From the 2001/02 season, the first Bundesliga was played again on a single track with ten clubs. The two last and first places from the second division were able to move up and down. The four leading clubs entered the play-off phase at the end of the season , in which they played for the German championship.
In the 2012/13 season, the first Bundesliga underwent another fundamental reform. Together with the Second Bundesliga, it was divided into four regional seasons (north, west, south and east) with six clubs each, which played for entry into a nationwide play-off phase. Main article: Rugby league system in Germany . Reasons for the reform were, among other things, significantly lower travel costs for the participating clubs and a more exciting game operation, which in recent years has only been dominated by very few clubs from the strongholds of German rugby.
Current situation
Teams of the 1st Rugby Bundesliga 2015/16 |
Since the 2015/16 season, the team has been playing on two tracks again with a north / east relay and a south / west relay of eight teams each. After the main round, the first of the two seasons play the semi-finals against the second of the other season. The winners of the semi-finals contest the final of the German championship.
Sub-levels
There has been a 2nd Bundesliga since the 1990s, which shortly after the fall of the Wall was initially divided into four seasons (North A and B and South A and B), but later on into the two seasons, North and South, with initially six each the 2001/02 season was increased to seven and from the 2002/03 season to eight teams each. From the 2012/13 season, the second Bundesliga was again divided into four seasons (north, west, south and east).
Below the 2nd Bundesliga are the Regionalliga Nord, the Regionalliga Nordost, the Regionalliga NRW, the Regionalliga Hessen, the Regionalliga Baden-Württemberg and the Regionalliga Bayern. A fourth division are the association leagues.

Others
- The RG Heidelberg is the only association that continuously consulted the First Bundesliga since its founding.
- Bundesliga record champions are the Heidelberg RK with eleven titles.
- It is remarkable that TSV Victoria Linden has won a total of 20 German championship titles since it was founded.
- It is also noteworthy that until 2005 at least one club from Hanover was in the final, never again after that (as of early 2020).
