The rowing society Heidelberg 1898 e. V. (short RG Heidelberg or RGH) is a Heidelberg sports club.

While in the early years the sporting offer only included rowing , also in cooperation with schools, it was supplemented by a rugby department in 1919 . As of 2012, RG Heidelberg had around 650 members, 350 of them in the rowing department.

Rowing department

The rowing department of the RG Heidelberg has around 350 members, half of whom are actively involved in rowing. The remaining members include supporting and external members. In fact, well over 500 people in all age groups take advantage of the rowing department's sporting activities every year. This high number comes about through cooperation with schools , as well as further social engagement of the association. This includes, for example, supervised rowing for children with cancer (in cooperation with the Heidelberg “Forest Pirates”), or the organization of the Benezif regatta “Rowing against Cancer” in Heidelberg.

history

The RGH was founded on June 4, 1898 in the Hotel "Perkeo" in Heidelberg. The ten founding members were joined by other people on the founding day, so that the RGH already comprised 43 members on the founding day. In the same month, the club's first boat arrived, a four-seater in clinker construction . At the end of the year it was founded, the RGH already owned four boats. The boathouse was in a rear building of the Heidelberg town hall .

In 1901 it was accepted into the DRV , for which the Mannheimer Ruderverein (today Mannheimer Rudergesellschaft Baden from 1880 ) was the godfather. In the same year it was included in the register of associations of the Grand Ducal District Court. From this point in time it was possible for the RGH to take part in regattas.

In 1903, five years after it was founded, the number of members had already risen to almost 200.

The cooperation with Heidelberg schools, which still exists today, was initiated in 1905 and began with the establishment of the pupil department for pupils of the Grand Ducal High School (today Helmholtzgymnasium Heidelberg).

Since the previous boathouse no longer met the requirements of the grown association, the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the new society and boathouse on Schlierbacher Landstrasse took place in 1903, which was moved into in the same year. This building fell victim to the expansion of the Neckar Valley railway line . In 1932, the association therefore converted the former turbine house of the Portland cement factory, which is still owned by the city of Heidelberg, into today's boathouse. This has been the seat of the RGH since then.

During the Second World War , the RGH boathouse was occupied by the Allies. As a result of vandalism after the end of the Second World War, the boat park and the furnishings of the boathouse were totally destroyed. In the course of the general upward trend in the Federal Republic of Germany, the RGH gradually recovered.

In the early and mid-1960s, the RGH was at its peak in rowing, which has not been surpassed to this day. At times, three teams of eight rowed for the RGH. B. brought in more than 20 victories in 1963, a considerable number to this day.

Rugby department

history

The rugby department of the RGH was founded in 1919 and initially served the rowers to bridge the winter season when rowing was not possible on the frozen Neckar.

The RGH was a founding member of the Rugby Bundesliga in 1971/72 and is the only club that has been a part of it continuously.

successes

The first successes of the RG Heidelberg came in the 1930s in the form of finals in the German championships. The RGH won this for the first time in 1980.

The RG Heidelberg also won the DRV Cup, which has been played since 1962, in 1967 (9: 3 against SV Odin Hannover), 1986 (13: 3 against DRC Hannover), 1995 (26: 6 against SC Neuenheim), 1997 (37:13 against DRC Hannover) and in 2004 (23:20 again against DRC Hannover). In contrast, the RGH lost eight times in the final of the DRV-Pokal, most recently in 2007 with 13:18 against SC 1880 Frankfurt.

The RGH is the only German club that has produced an English national rugby player ( Philipp Christophers ) from its ranks.
