The Rugby Club Berlin Grizzlies eV , Berlin Grizzlies for short , is a rugby union club from Berlin . The club, which is based in the Treptow-Köpenick district, plays in the rugby Bundesliga .

history

The Grizzlies were founded in 2011 by Mick Schmidt. First they started in a syndicate with the second team of USV Potsdam in the Regionalliga Nordost and won it straight away. Due to the league reform in 2012 , promotion to the 1st Bundesliga would have been possible, but the club decided to start in the 2nd Bundesliga. The Berlin Grizzlies finished the regional preliminary round of the 2nd Bundesliga 2012/13 in 4th place and qualified for the League Cup . During the winter break, the USV Potsdam announced the withdrawal from the gaming community and all remaining games were given up.

The 2013/14 season started the Berlin Grizzlies in the 2nd Bundesliga East in a syndicate with SC Siemensstadt . They finished the regional preliminary round in 1st place, which enabled them to participate in the DRV Cup . While they were able to prevail against RC Mainz in the second round , the quarter-finals were lost against RC Rottweil . In 2014/15 the Grizzlies played for the first time in the 1st Bundesliga East. They finished the regional preliminary round in third place and thus qualified for the championship round for the first time. Three game days before the end of this, however, there was another setback after SC Siemensstadt dissolved the syndicate. The remaining games were canceled.

In the 2015/16 season, the Berlin Grizzlies provided their own team in the Regionalliga Nordost, which they won. In 2016/17 the march through in the 2nd Bundesliga East succeeded. After the Grizzlies took first place in the league, they achieved promotion to the 1st Bundesliga through the playoff victories against Bremen 1860 and SG Odin / Döhren .

In their first independent season in the Bundesliga, the Berlin Grizzlies took seventh place in the North / East relay in 2017/18 . This meant the way into the relegation for the capital city, in which they could however assert themselves with a 24:19 away win at TSV Victoria Linden .
