The DRV-Pokal has been a rugby cup competition for German club teams that has been held since 1963 . It is organized annually by the German Rugby Association (DRV) for the Bundesliga teams.

DRV Cup after the 2012 reform

The Bundesliga was divided into four regional groups from 2012 to 2015. There was north, east, south and west. The DRV-Pokal was played in two seasons north / east and south / west. In the end, after the final table was determined, the cup winners were determined in a knockout round in a cross comparison.

The teams in places 1 and 2 of the final table qualified directly for the quarter-finals, the teams in places 7 and 8 of the respective relays were eliminated from the cup. The remaining places played crosswise against the other season for the quarter-finals (NO3-SW5, NO4-SW6, SW3-NO5 and SW4-NO6).

In the further course, the quarter and semi-finals and at the end the final were played. The winner of the final was the DRV Cup winner.

DRV Cup after the 2015 Bundesliga reform

The DRV-Pokal is again a classic cup competition. It has nothing to do with the league game operations. The teams of the 1st Bundesliga that did not take part in the semi-finals of the German championship take part in the DRV-Pokal (3rd to 8th place). A preliminary round, a quarter-final, a semi-final and a final will be played. The teams that finished 3rd and 4th in the current season are automatically seeded for the 1/4 final. The winner wins the DRV cup.

The competition is intended to enable the 15-man teams from the midfield and end of the table in the first Bundesliga season to work together at a demanding level in the best season. Supplementary and junior players can specifically get playing time because it is a competition that is separate from the Bundesliga. Clubs that take part in 7-a-side tournaments at the same time and provide teams for them can fill up the team that takes part in the DRV Cup with players from the reserve and young players, who also get playing time at a high level.

DRV Cup after the 2017 reform

In 2017, the DRV Cup was expanded to include two preliminary rounds. Every team in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga takes part. The pairings are drawn and all games are knockout games. If teams from different league levels meet, the team from the lower league always has home rights.

In the first preliminary round, the teams of the 2nd Bundesliga play against each other. In the second preliminary round, the winners play against the teams of the 1st Bundesliga. (The losers in this first or second preliminary round play the league cup.) The main round, the quarter and semi-finals and at the end the final are played out.

The winner of the final is the DRV cup winner.
