Organization and licensing
Licenses for the Bundesliga with championship , DRV Cup and League Cup are issued by the German Rugby Association and for the subordinate leagues by the regional associations.
The German Rugby Association has delegated responsibility for the organization of Bundesliga matches to the Rugby Bundesliga Committee. This committee consists of all 48 Bundesliga clubs and representatives of the association. All other leagues are in the hands of the national associations or their established institutions.
Match operation 2012/13 - 2014/15
With the reform of the Bundesliga in 2012, the rigid division between the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga was lifted. In contrast to other sports, the rugby Bundesliga now consisted of several phases in which teams from the 1st and 2nd league played together.
This Bundesliga match with championship round, DRV Cup and League Cup only existed for three years. The Bundesliga was divided into four regional groups. There was north, east, south and west. At the beginning each team played in their regional group. The teams were then divided into a qualification phase. There was played in two seasons north / east and south / west. In the end, after the final table was determined, the cup winners were determined in a knockout round in a cross comparison.
Depending on which cup you qualified for, there were different effects on promotion and relegation. Participants in the championship round could not relegate. A team was promoted to the 1st Bundesliga if at most one other team from the same regional group was placed in front of it. As a result, a team relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga if at least two teams from the same regional group were placed in front of it. A team was relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga if at least two other teams from the same regional group were placed in front of it.
