In the rugby Bundesliga 2012/13 48 teams played on two levels in four regional groups each. The season started on August 25, 2012 and ended with the German championship on June 15, 2013, interrupted by a winter break from November 25, 2012 to March 3, 2013. The regular season ended on May 1, 2013. A week later began the knockout rounds in the championship round , DRV Cup and League Cup . For the first time a team from Luxembourg played in the 1st Bundesliga.

The league underwent radical changes at the end of the 2011/12 season. In the 2011/12 season, 10 teams were still playing in a league on an "everyone against everyone" principle with a semi-final and a final at the end. At the beginning of the 2012/13 season, the league was expanded and divided into several phases. In the 1st and 2nd league, 6 teams play in each regional group, i. H. 24 per league and a total of 48 for the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga in total. The Berlin Grizzlies and the reserve of the USB Potsdam formed a syndicate in the 2nd Bundesliga. The DRV Hannover withdrew from the 1st Bundesliga before the 1st game and had to start in the 3rd league in the 2012/13 season.

The first phase, the regional preliminary round, ended on October 3, 2012. The qualification phase then began in the three cups championship round , DRV cup and league cup . The best four teams in the 1st Bundesliga from each regional group qualified for the championship round. Those behind two in the 1st Bundesliga and the top two in the 2nd Bundesliga qualified for the DRV-Pokal and the bottom four teams in the 2nd Bundesliga played in the Liga-Pokal. In the second phase, each regional group no longer played for itself, but North and East went into one season and South and West into a second season.

In the 2nd phase, the game was played according to the "everyone against everyone" principle, with results from teams that had already played against each other in the preliminary round. All teams automatically qualified for the third phase, the knockout round.

Due to the expansion of the league, no team had to be promoted at the end of the 2011/12 season. But 12 teams rose.

  • Newcomers from the 2nd Bundesliga South / West: Heidelberger TV, RC Luxembourg, ASV Cologne Rugby, RC Mainz, RC Aachen
  • Newcomers from the 2nd Bundesliga North / East: FC St. Pauli Rugby, SC Germania List, TSV Victoria Linden, Hamburger RC, Berliner SV 92, USV Potsdam Rugby (DRC Hannover withdrew)
  • Newcomers from the rugby regional league: RC Leipzig (Berlin Grizzlies withdrew at the beginning of the season)

Two teams ended the regular season without defeat. The Heidelberg RK won the final with 41-10 against SC Neuenheim.

Phase 2 - Qualifying Round

In the second phase, 16 teams play in two seasons with 8 teams each. Each team plays against the other. If the match has already taken place in the 1st phase, the game is not played again, but the result is adopted. All teams in this phase are qualified for the knockout round.

  • The home game of Heusenstamm against Mainz was played in Mainz because the pitch in Heusenstamm was not playable due to the weather.
  • Both games between Heusenstamm and Heidelberg RK were played in Heusenstamm.
  • The TV Pforzheim was punished by the DRV with a point deduction of 2 points due to the lack of youth teams.
  • The home game of SC 1880 Frankfurt against SC Neuenheim ended 15-59, but was later changed to 50-0 for Frankfurt, as Neuenheim used two non-eligible players.
  • The home game of RG Heidelberg against RC Mainz did not take place because Mainz canceled the game due to missing players. The game was rated 50-0 for Heidelberg.

Phase 3 - KO round

KO round of the championship round

In the third phase, 16 teams play a knockout round. The winner of a game progresses, the loser is eliminated. First the teams from the north-east play against the teams from the south-west. The knockout round began on May 4, 2013 with 16 teams, followed by the quarter-finals on May 25, 2013, the semi-finals on June 1, 2013 and the final for the German championship on June 15, 2013.
