The Rugby Club Leipzig eV (RC Leipzig) is a Leipzig rugby union sports club . In addition to rugby, football, volleyball, table tennis and gymnastics are offered. In December 2013 the RC Leipzig had around 200 members. The club colors are blue and yellow. The club is a member of the Rugby Association of Saxony and the German Rugby Association .

The club is known nationwide for its rugby department, which is considered to be the most successful in Central Germany. The first men's team has played in the Bundesliga since 2012. From the 2013/14 season, a second team could also be set up for the regional league. In the past, numerous titles such as the Central German Championship in Rugby 7 or the Regionalliga 7s were won.

The roots of the association, which was founded in 2004, go back to the 1950s. Teams from the city won the GDR championship nine times . Many former national rugby players of the GDR belong to the club , such as the record national player and national team coach Gerhard Schubert .

history

prehistory

Rugby in Leipzig dates back to the 1950s when several rugby sections were founded. The university sports group of the German University of Physical Culture ( HSG DHfK Leipzig ), the company sports associations Lokomotive Wahren Leipzig and Gastronom Leipzig and the Army Sports Club Leipzig were four teams that formed during this time. The DHfK was the most successful team. The team won five championships between 1954 and 1963 and has since been the record champions of the GDR. The forerunner club of RC Leipzig, the BSG Lokomotive Wahren-Leipzig , was also one of the most successful rugby teams in the GDR with four titles. The BSG Lok had its successful period in the late 1970s when it broke the dominance of BSG Stahl Hennigsdorf and won four GDR championships in a row. After the rugby sections of the German University of Physical Culture and the Army Sports Club were dissolved, the former four Leipzig teams still had two rugby sections at the BSG Lokomotive and Gastronom in the 1980s.

With the German reunification, the two rugby sections of the two company sports associations were temporarily transferred to the HSG DHfK Leipzig. In September 1994 the rugby players joined TSV 1893 Leipzig-Wahren , where they again founded their own department. The greatest success of this time was the German runner-up in the U12. The rugby players stayed with TSV for the next ten years until they founded RC Leipzig in the Lützschena-Stahmeln district in September 2004.

2004 to 2008 - founding years

Some players stayed with TSV to play touch rugby. A year later there was finally a successful change to SG LVB in Leipzig-Connewitz, where the department is still located today.

After the establishment of the RC Leipzig, the club grounds had to be prepared for regular games and training operations. Since the square was not used for many years, some buildings and furnishings were in poor condition. This ultimately led to the old club bar being demolished due to its dilapidation. Another important topic was the lighting of the square. Since the players also had to train in the dark from autumn onwards, it was important that the playing field lighting was functioning. This project was tackled with the help of some association members. The board of directors under Volker Plank was under great pressure in the first few years. Many activities that the umbrella association had previously taken on had to be carried out independently after the association was founded. The club management had always laid the foundations for the sport using their free time.

Regular gaming operations began shortly after it was founded. Above all, we continued to work on the next generation and built on Müller's success in 2002. The first title of the young club was the 2nd place of Saxony at the German championships of the state associations and the 1st place at the German championship A-pupil in 2004 with the trainer Jens Meierhöfer. The association took its children and young people abroad, for example to Toulouse in France, and organized a German youth championship in 2005. The successful youth work was recognized by the German Rugby Youth . For this reason, a screening course for the German U17 national team took place in September of the year it was founded. In the near future, young players from Leipzig were repeatedly nominated for these courses. In 2006 the club celebrated "80 years - Stahmeln sports field". On December 15, 1926, the sports field and a toboggan run were inaugurated in Stahmeln. The facility was built by so-called emergency workers - a form of employment for unemployed former soldiers. The Rugby Club Leipzig took this anniversary as an opportunity to celebrate a big party with all members, friends and sponsors.

In the years 2009 and 2010, the club life increasingly normalized. Despite some problems in the club management, the club was on a good foundation. After six years, Volker Plank resigned as 1st chairman. This ended a long, honorable rugby management career in Leipzig for the time being. Because he had been in various management positions in sport since the 1980s.

At the general meeting in 2010, some board positions were filled. Torsten Spangenberg, long-time rugby player and junior coach, took over the role of 1st chairman. His aim was to attract more people from downtown Leipzig to the association. He also took up the topic of sponsoring anew. Through personal diligence and discussions, an attempt was made to get the local entrepreneurs to provide support. In part, he succeeded in doing this.

There were changes not only in the management of the club, but also in the sporting field. Falk Müller, also a long-time rugby player and youth coach, became the new coach of the men's team. There have been many changes. Above all, a new team spirit and new motivations developed for the club. The change in training led to a lasting increase in the team's performance. This led to various successes such as 1st place in the Mitteldeutsche 7er-Liga 2011, 1st place in the NordOst-7s in 2012 and 2nd place in the Regionalliga Nord-Ost.

A league reform in 2012 fundamentally changed the German Bundesliga. RC Leipzig was able to move up from the 3rd division / regional league to the 1st rugby league. With this reform new doors were opened for the association. On the one hand, the city of Leipzig promotes Bundesliga clubs and, on the other hand, there are new opportunities for sponsors.

On September 1, 2012, the RC Leipzig played the first Bundesliga game since it was founded in 2003. The RK 03 Berlin won 116: 00. An attempt by the Leipzig was not achieved. The first points for the trade fair townspeople could only be scored in the following game. In the last game of the regional preliminary round, the RC Leipzig scored its first Bundesliga attempt. On September 15, 2012, President Torsten Spangenberg resigned from office with immediate effect. After a brief period without a president, Karsten Heine was elected as the new president in November 2012. An important point for him will be communication in the club. At the end of 2012 the association successfully concluded a cooperation with the Leipzig Medica Clinic for outpatient rehabilitation and sports medicine, the largest facilities for outpatient rehabilitation in Germany. The Medica-Klinik supports the Bundesliga team in the medical field. The 2012/13 season and thus the club's first Bundesliga season ended in the quarter-finals of the DRV Cup with a loss to StuSta Munich.

Hans Scriba, Ambassador Stofile and Karsten Heine at the 10th anniversary celebration (from left to right)

On August 31, 2013 RC Leipzig celebrated its 10th anniversary in the club. For this anniversary, the founder and head of the South African Rugby Academy (Sharks Academy) Hans Scriba visited the sports club. Scriba came to Leipzig with the aim of promoting the club and the Central German rugby region in the long term. Together with Scriba, the successful sporting path should be continued after the Rugby Club Leipzig had already been able to show some successes after its first 10 years of independence. The Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa Makhenkesi Arnold Stofile also attended the event. In the second year after promotion to the 1st Bundesliga, the club was able to increasingly stabilize in its league. While a second team could be integrated into the regional league in the meantime, the first team went into the winter break at the end of 2013 as leaders in the DRV-Pokal. In 2014, the RCL was able to secure the championship lead in the qualifying round of the DRV-Pokal for the first time.

In April 2014, in the middle of the current season, the former successful coach Falk Müller resigned. The reason for the separation was a long argument between the board and the coach of the men's team at the time. The team's attempts to mediate between the two parties failed. The board ruled with leave of absence and dismissal of the coach, who then left the club. A few weeks later, the Leipzig Scorpions rugby club was founded with its home ground in Leipzig's Mariannenpark . In June 2014, the RCL reached the final of the DRV Cup. Due to the deployment of a player who was not eligible to play who had not played a game for RC Leipzig before the deadline of January 31, 2014, the DRV's arbitration board dismissed the club's victory in the semi-finals a week later and rated the game 50-0 against Leipzig . Thus, in its most successful season to date, the Rugby Club Leipzig was eliminated from the cup competition due to a violation of the DRV rules.

At the beginning of the 2014/15 season, the coaching team was completely changed after the departure of former coach Falk Müller. The new head coach was Robby Lehmann, who came from USV Potsdam , where he also continued to work as a coach. He was supported by Andreas Kuntze and Gerhard Schubert. In the preliminary round of the 1st Bundesliga East you met again on the Berlin RC and the RK 03 Berlin. With 5:44 (BRC) and 46: 6 (RK 03), the RCL lost the games as expected and clearly, but were still satisfied because they lost 109: 0 and 3:74 against the same opponents in the previous season. The other three preliminary round matches were also lost, so that Leipzig finished last in the preliminary round. In the following DRV Cup, the RCL won five games and reached a draw. On December 6, 2014, the RCL won its last game for 2014 and went into the winter break as the championship leader.

The renovation and expansion of the RCL site began on schedule. The major project “Construction” was continued and completed in 2015. In November / December, the outdoor area was converted to make it accessible for disabled people (funding from the Barrier-Free Building 2014 investment program, “Favorite Places for Everyone”). In 2015 new changing rooms, sanitary facilities, multi-purpose room and office were built.

On February 1, 2015, the association announced that an international 7-man tournament would be held in the course of the 1000th anniversary of the city of Leipzig in the summer. A tournament with 1000 players is planned. The tournament with the name Leipzig 7's should continue to be held annually with a children's, women's and men's tournament. The first plans for the Leipzig 7's should already have been made in 2010. These plans have been concretized and implemented since 2013. In October 2013, the Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa Makhenkesi Arnold Stofile announced his willingness to become patron of the tournament. In November 2014, the Leipzig Scorpions rugby club, which is also based in Leipzig, announced an international 7-a-side tournament under the same and almost identically written name Leipzig 7s . In the course of this publication, the RCL registered two trademarks ( Rugby Leipzig 7’s and Rugby Leipzig Sevens ) with the German Patent and Trademark Office in mid-November . These trademarks were legally registered in January 2015. This prevented the Leipzig Scorpions from holding a tournament under this name. After an extraordinary general meeting of the Rugby Association of Saxony and legal letters from the RCL, those responsible for the Leipzig Scorpions announced that the tournament would be canceled. On June 19, 2015, the association announced that the women's tournament, which was to take place on June 20 and 21 as part of the Leipzig 7s, would be postponed for organizational reasons and that a new date for autumn should be announced in good time. The men's tournament, rescheduled from two to one day at short notice, took place on July 4th, 2015. With five participating teams, the goal of bringing 1000 players to Leipzig was not achieved.

In the second half of the season, the club was able to advance to the semi-finals of the DRV Cup in the Bundesliga . The opponent in the semifinals was again RC Rottweil. Last year, the RCL was eliminated from the semi-finals because it was sanctioned by the sports court for playing a player who was not eligible to play. In the new edition of last year's semi-finals, the Leipzig team lost out on the field this time. They lost at 5:17 in the end.

On January 30th, 2016, the RC Leipzig took 3rd place in the survey and award "Leipzig Team of the Year".

The first rugby team

The RC Leipzig team consists primarily of amateur players who play rugby in their free time. Most of the players are students. This leads to fluctuations. The players come to Leipzig to study, play in the club during this time and then usually leave Leipzig again. Nevertheless, there is a core of Leipzigers who form the basis of the association.

Youth rugby

The offspring of the RCL (2013)

The Rugby Club Leipzig is very active in the youth field. Targeted publicity campaigns are carried out to recruit children and young people interested in rugby. In addition, working groups are organized in schools so that the children come into contact with the ball at an early stage. In the association, the children and young people are trained by trained instructors and licensed trainers. The basis for this are the youth concepts presented by the German Rugby Association . The Rugby Club Leipzig regularly takes part in games in Saxony, Brandenburg and Berlin with its offspring. In addition, the trainers try to organize extraordinary activities such as trips to neighboring countries or training camps.

In 2004 the U14 team won the title of German champions. In the further course of the year, the youngsters were able to win regional and national 7-a-side rugby titles in 2011 and 2012.

Women rugby

Women's rugby has a long tradition in Leipzig. After the old coaching team left, new and younger coaches could be found. Thanks to the committed appearance of the Leipzig rugby women, good results have been achieved in the past. Today the women play in the German 7th League East.

Achievements and titles

The first team has played in the Bundesliga since the 2012/13 season and the second team in the Regionalliga North / East since the 2013/14 season. With four championships and a cup victory in the rugby section of the BSG Lokomotive Wahren Leipzig in the GDR and other titles in the recent past, the RC Leipzig is the most successful rugby club in Central Germany after the HSG DHfK Leipzig.

Symbols

The RC Leipzig logo shows the club's lettering, a lion and a rugby ball. The lion symbolizes the city of Leipzig and is intended to show the bond and this. Over time, the logo was adapted in various forms, whereby the basic appearance remained the same.

shirt

In the long history of rugby in Leipzig, many games were played by different clubs. Today, RC Leipzig can look back on a small collection of rugby jerseys. The five photos in the gallery show historical jerseys from Leipzig teams. The current one, as a sketch in the article's info box, shows the club's colors yellow and blue as well as the club's lettering and logo.

Club environment

sports ground

The game and training area is located in Leipzig-Stahmeln , on Stahmelner Straße below the old federal highway 6. The club has a large club area that had to be renovated in many places after it was founded. Today it consists of a club building with changing rooms as well as sanitary areas and a renovated gym. A grandstand is available for spectators of the games. In the background of the grandstand and on the opposite side of the field, the sponsors have areas for presentation. New lighting for the square and renovation of various club buildings are planned.

Sponsors and the public

The local daily Leipziger Volkszeitung , BILD and other print media report regularly on the successes and events in and around the association. The TV station MDR as well as internet stations have opened a new chapter in the image marketing of the rugby club through video recordings. A large number of sponsors support the association. In the past, the Rugby Club Leipzig increasingly appeared at high-profile events in Leipzig. The club presented the sport at the “American Sports Day” and the “Olympic Days” mainly to attract new young players.

Cooperation and collaboration

The Rugby Club Leipzig was able to conclude a cooperation with the South African Rugby Academy Sharks. As a first measure of the new cooperation, the Leipzig trainer Falk Müller traveled to Durban in October 2013 to see the structures and services of the Sharks Academy for himself. Discussions with the Sharks trainers took place in this context. The aim of this cooperation is that players from the Sharks Academy come to Leipzig regularly and play for the team and thus pass on their experience to the team.

School and university sports

The implementation of rugby measures at schools and universities is the essential basis for the expansion of the sport and partly also for the membership of the club. The volunteers at the Rugby Club Leipzig go to schools in their free time or organize courses as part of university sports to get pupils and students excited about rugby.
