Falk Müller (born October 24, 1968 in Leipzig ) is a German rugby coach, referee and former player. Among other things, he coached the rugby Bundesliga team at RC Leipzig . As a player he was a GDR national player .

Player career

Falk Müller started rugby in 1979 at the age of 10 with TSV 1893 Leipzig-Wahren . In 1986 Müller took part in a tour of Romania with a selection of players from the Saxony and Brandenburg region . At the end of this tour he was named "Best Player". From 1985 to 1986 - interrupted by an injury - and from 1988 to 1990 Müller was a GDR national player.

In his youth he came second in the GDR junior championship in 1986 and third in 1987. Müller and his teammates were in the last GDR Cup final. After the reunification, the team switched to SC DHfK Leipzig . As a stopover, the rugby department at TSV Leipzig Wahren was reactivated a few years later.

Career as a club coach

TSV 1893 Leipzig-Wahren

From 2000 onwards, Müller increasingly began to work off the field. As a junior coach, he was able to lead his team up to the runner-up at the German championship in 2002 in the U 12 age group. Two years later, his previous team, now under the new coach Jens Meierhöfer, became German champions in the U14 age group. When the RC Leipzig (RCL) was founded, he also changed his membership.

Rugby Club Leipzig

Müller continued to be involved in the youth sector. In addition to his work at Rugby Club Leipzig, from 2008/2009 he supported the SV Stahl Brandis club in the surrounding area in setting up the rugby department. In doing so, he ran school workshops and, based on his experience, contributed to the positive development of the new club. Other school working groups in Leipzig, which were initiated by Müller, still exist today and are carried out independently by the sports teachers. A school company won the 1st School Rugby Cup of the Sparkasse Leipzig .

In 2010, Müller had a special opportunity. He was able to take over the post of coach of the men's team, at that time still in the regional league. Thanks to a consistent training plan and a long-term strategy, the RCL was able to place second in the table of the Regionalliga Nordost in 2012. Due to this fact, a Bundesliga reform, the expansion of the 1st Bundesliga to 24 teams and the forced relegation of RU Hohenneuendorf e. V. promotion to the first rugby league was possible. With regional championship titles in 7-a-side rugby, Müller was also able to prove his skills in the Olympic division and establish the RCL as the most successful club in Central Germany .

In spring 2014, in the middle of the current season, Müller temporarily resigned from his position as coach. The reason for this was a lengthy argument between the board and the coach of the men's team at the time. The argument ultimately led to personal attacks between different people in the club. Even after attempts by the team to mediate between the board and the coach, no agreement could be reached. In the end, the trainer Falk Müller, who was on leave and later dismissed and who was involved in some of the successes of the RCL, including in the 1st Bundesliga, left the club. A few weeks later the rugby club Leipzig Scorpions, with its home ground in Leipzig's Mariannenpark , was founded.

The junior team around trainer Falk Müller and school coordinator Mirko Möbius-Winkler visited seven elementary schools in the north and east of Leipzig in the first few months after they were founded. This enabled the young club to introduce rugby to over 300 children. Inquiries about long-term cooperation in the form of all-day offers have already been received. The next step is now to attend and introduce rugby to the lower grades of high schools.

State trainer in Saxony

Müller has achieved success as a club coach, so that an appointment as a national coach in 2012/2013 was a logical consequence. By participating in the German championships of the regional associations, an attempt was made to sustainably promote the region of Central Germany. At the state association championship 2013 of the men "Berlin Sevens" Saxony reached the 7th place.

In August 2014, the Rugby Association of Saxony spotted young players from the Saxon clubs on the grounds of the Rugby Club Leipzig. The event was conceived as a mixture of training camp and sighting. Under the guidance of the national coaches Falk Müller, Lars Wochatz and Martin Wittig, potential players were discovered and the current level of performance recorded.
