history

In 1826, the Sparkasse opened its premises in the Neue Waage to the Leipzig public not far from today's main office in Löhrs Carré . Influential citizens of the city had suggested the establishment of an institute, which should enable the interest-bearing and safe investment of funds.

In 2004 the Kreissparkasse Torgau-Oschatz based in Torgau was taken over , in 2005 the Sparkasse Delitzsch-Eilenburg based in Delitzsch . These two predecessor institutes each came into being in 1952 as part of the reorganization of the savings banks in the GDR .

The work of the foundation was presented to the public in October 2001 at a ceremony. The art gallery of the Sparkasse Leipzig

The art gallery is located at one of the oldest Sparkasse locations in Leipzig. Acquired by the Sparkasse in 1914, the building was their main office beyond the Second World War until it was expropriated in 1950. The Sparkasse has owned it again since 1994, and the building was extensively renovated and opened in 2001. The art gallery has its 352 m² exhibition area in the extension from 1924, directly on the bank of the Pleißemühlgraben and shows works from the collection of the Sparkasse Leipzig. With around 3000 exhibits by 150 artists who live and work in and around Leipzig, it is the largest collection of the “ Leipzig School ”.

Sparkasse Museum Leipzig

The permanent exhibition of the Sparkasse Museum leads in five chapters through the history of the Leipzig Sparkasse - from the first initiative of the Leipzig Sparkasse founders to the financial services provider of the present. The background is formed by social, economic and political developments of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The visitor can expect the first general ledger of the Sparkasse Leipzig (1826–1838), one of the first armored deposit boxes from the middle of the 19th century, savings bank books and currencies from different epochs, office machines and equipment from the last century, historical savings advertising and much more.
