history

Milow office in the former church

On June 22, 1840, the magistrate announced the establishment of a savings bank in the "Potsdamer Wochenblatt". It is "connected with various responsibilities and sacrifices on the part of the municipality" and should "give the poorer class in particular the opportunity (...) to store their savings for emergencies and old age safely and at an interest-bearing rate (2.5% annually)". However, more than ten thalers a month could not be paid in, and more than one hundred thalers could not be in an account. From 1840 on, the Sparkasse in Potsdam was housed in the rooms of the combing bank in the old town hall for almost 100 years . The Sparkasse der Stadt Brandenburg was founded on January 5th, 1830, followed on January 3rd, 1857 by the Kreissparkasse Oranienburg. In 1858 a savings bank was established in Belzig and on December 1, 1889 the Stadtsparkasse Oranienburg. The Kreissparkasse Rathenow, formerly with the additional name Westhavelland, has existed since 1857. Like all other savings banks in what was then Prussia , it was established on the basis of the savings bank regulations of December 12, 1838. The Kreissparkasse Gransee was only founded in 1896, making it the youngest of all legal predecessors of the Mittelbrandenburgische Sparkasse.

Mittelbrandenburgische Sparkasse was founded on July 1, 1991. It had its headquarters and business premises from June 22, 1993 in the former residential barracks of the 3rd Squadron of the 1st Guard Uhlan Regiment on Luisenplatz in Potsdam, where the Sparkasse's branch is still located today. Since 1996 the headquarters of the Sparkasse has been an administration building in Potsdam-Waldstadt .

On July 1, 1991, the savings banks in Potsdam, Brandenburg, Belzig, Oranienburg and Nauen were merged to form the Mittelbrandenburgische Sparkasse in Potsdam. On July 1, 1993 the Kreissparkasse Gransee and on July 1, 1994 the Kreissparkasse Rathenow joined the Mittelbrandenburgische Sparkasse.

As part of the municipal regional reform, the Treuenbrietzen branch of the Kreissparkasse Jüterbog was incorporated into the Mittelbrandenburgische Sparkasse on February 17, 1995. On February 12, 2004, the Kreissparkasse Teltow-Fläming joined the Mittelbrandenburgische Sparkasse. The youngest member of the association for the Mittelbrandenburgische Sparkasse in Potsdam has been the Sparkasse Dahme-Spreewald founded in 1824 since the merger on January 1, 2005. The predecessor institutes each came into being in 1952 as part of the reorganization of the savings banks in the GDR .

In May 2009, MBS took over Weberbank Actiengesellschaft, which specializes in wealthy private customers, from WestLB . The institute, with total assets of around three billion euros, had to sell these under pressure from the EU Commission. Weberbank is to take over asset management for customers of other savings banks in the future.
