In 1880, the "Frankfurt Football Club" was founded through the merger of the two rugby teams Germania and Franconia Frankfurt under the aegis of the outstanding athlete Herrmann Stasny . The only sport practiced at the time was still called rugby football (compared to association football, which later became football ). In 1893 FC Frankfurt became a member of the South-West German Football Union . On July 8, 1893, they lost 1-0 to the selection of the SDFU in Heidelberg, and on July 23, 1893, they won the revenge in Frankfurt 1-0.

After many successful games against clubs in Germany, the first trip abroad was started in 1894. At that time there was a meeting with the Blackheath in London. In recognition of the performance of the guests at the time, the Blackheath Football Club gave rugby players the right to play their games in their own club colors, red and black, in the future.

As part of the Olympic Games and the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris , a rugby match was played against France for the first time. On October 14, 1900, the Frankfurt football club represented Germany in the Vélodrome de Vincennes against a French team. The game ended 27:17 for France.

Hockey has been one of the club's sports since 1902. A hockey game at the club was first reported in 1905. In the person of Moritz Freiherr von Bissing, the Frankfurt Football Club gave a decisive impetus to the development of hockey in Germany with the Silver Shield Foundation in 1907. As a touring award for German hockey clubs, the silver shield gave hockey a supraregional character, which ultimately led to the establishment of the German Hockey Federation in 1909.

In 1914 the “Frankfurt Football Club” was transformed into the “Frankfurt 1880” e. V. renamed. In the following years, after stops at the Körnerwiese, the Palmengarten and the Louisa, the club moved to today's club complex on Adickesallee in the north end . Charismatic club members like Richard Merton and others made this move possible with immense personal commitment.

In 1924 the club had five different sports departments (rugby, hockey, tennis, athletics and winter sports).

In 1926 Milly Reuter , who was active in the athletics of the SC 1880, set a new world record in javelin throw. She threw him 38.36 m.

Sports operations were discontinued during the Second World War . It was not until 1945, after the end of the Second World War, that sport was resumed, but only hockey and rugby could be practiced.

In 1958 the club area was expanded to 70,000 m².

In 1968 the men won the first German championships in hockey and later the European Cup in hockey five times.

In 1978 a tennis and squash hall was built on the club's premises. In 1980 the sports club celebrated its 100th anniversary. In 1980 and 1989 the first two grass pitches were converted into artificial turf pitches. In 1999 a new club restaurant was founded ("The Clubhouse").

In 2004 the club expanded the sports program again, adding a department for lacrosse . In 2005, the 125th anniversary was celebrated as part of a large event. With around 1850 members, more than half of them under the age of 18, the "Club" is one of the largest hockey clubs in Germany.

In 2007 the new artificial turf 2 was inaugurated.

Rugby is the oldest and therefore the founding sport offered by SC 1880.

In 1951 the rugby department of SC 1880 played in Oxford against Wadham College and as early as 1953, as often before 1940, the Oxford Greyhounds came to Frankfurt. There were other international matches against the university teams of Parma, Paris (PUC Paris) and Brussels.

36 men from SC 1880 have qualified as national players in 142 appointments .

Today players from more than 20 nations play for the rugby department.

In 2006, Ulrich Byzio set up a professional rugby team in Germany for the first time in 1880, with the vast majority of players making rugby their profession. The players from 16 nations won all games in the first half of the 2006/07 season with the exception of a tie against Sport Club Neuenheim (Heidelberg) and led the table by a large margin even after the first half of the season . The final of the German championship on May 12, 2007 was lost in front of the home crowd against the defending champion Rudergesellschaft Heidelberg (RGH) with 15:23. In the following two years, the team won the German championship twice in a row by winning the finals against the RGH (28:13 in 2008) and the Heidelberg Rowing Club .

tennis

Tennis was integrated into the club as a separate department in 1918, chaired by Moritz Freiherr von Bissing. Since there was no tennis facility of their own available at that time, the tennis-playing members used the tennis courts of the Frankfurt sports club Sachsenhausen Forsthausstraße. With the move to today's club area, a separate tennis facility was built, which was inaugurated in mid-1923. In women's tennis, Ilse Friedleben was one of the club's most successful players, winning the German tennis championships five times in a row.

Today the tennis department of SC 1880 with over 1,000 members is the largest tennis department in Hessen. The tennis facility has 16 clay courts and a tennis hall with three courts. The youth teams play regularly in the highest Hessian classes.

The women's team currently plays in the 2nd Bundesliga , the men's team in the Association League .

lacrosse

Lacrosse has been played in the SC 80 since 2000. The Frankfurt Cosmos team was allowed to visit the site. In 2004, lacrosse was integrated into the SC 80 as a division with a women's and a men's team and has since become an integral part of the SC 80.

In 2005 the first men became German champions at a DM finals, which was also held at the SC80 at the same time.

The 1st Lacrosse women of the SC80 became German runner-up in 2008.

The lacrosse department has provided national players for all national teams (senior national team men and women, U21 national team men and women) of the German Lacrosse Association.

In addition to the adult teams, there is now also youth training for young people aged 10 and over.
