The sports club Neuenheim 1902 (SCN) is a rugby club from the Heidelberg district of Neuenheim . According to the club's own information, SC Neuenheim is the rugby club with the largest number of members in Germany. In addition, the club can boast several German championship titles, including from more recent times.

Club history

The Neuenheim sports club was founded in 1902. Edward Hill Ullrich made the sport known for the first time in Heidelberg. In 1860 he began to familiarize his students with the sport at Heidelberg College . The pedagogue and later chairman of the German Rugby Football Association (DRFV) could occasionally be found in his local "Gambrinus". There he brought his knowledge and enthusiasm for the sport to some young men. Eleven Neuenheimers then took the initiative, collected 12 marks for a first, leather rugby egg and founded the SCN. It was originally founded as the Neuenheim football club, because rugby was considered a variant of football (with picking up the hand) in its early days.

Due to the steadily growing popularity of the club, additional members were quickly found who enabled the club to set up a complete team. The provisional training field in the Neckar foreland was exchanged for a more professional one, which was made available to the ever-growing club . The first general assembly took place on January 1, 1903. Hans Helmstädter emerged as the first chairman and Jakob Ehbrecht as the second chairman . Konrad Voth held the post of secretary held, Karl Lenz was given the post of computer and kit man was Fritz Knapp. They agreed on a monthly fee of 40 pfennigs and the club colors that still exist today.

In the course of the next general assembly, further important steps for the continued existence and expansion of the association were decided. Topics such as sportswear, song books, excursions and Christmas parties were on the agenda. The first named FCN team appeared with eight strikers, two half-players, four three-quarters and the goalkeeper. Ludwig Driver was mentioned as an outstanding player. Due to local audience interest, someone was hired in 1905 to take care of ticket sales. Within a period of three years, the newly founded association had established itself in the city and was well known to Heidelberg residents.

In 1923 the name of the club was changed to Sportclub Neuenheim, as the name football club - after the separation of football and rugby - no longer appeared suitable. The name of the Neuenheim district was emphasized because the rugby sport found a main foster home in the rugby stronghold of Heidelberg, which was already at that time, on the soil of Neuenheim. In addition, numerous long-established citizens of Neuenheim have belonged to the association since it was founded, e.g. Baumgärtner, Bender, Ehhalt, Frauenfeld, Heiler, Heuser, Heiß, Karch, Koch, Konold, Kohlweiler, Langer, Lenz ,reiber, Überle, Vogel, Voth, Weber and others more.

Members and active members

Among the 122 clubs of the German Rugby Association, the SCN is one of the clubs with the largest number of members, with currently 576 members, of which 447 are male and 129 are female. A considerable number of members is mainly due to the high proportion of children and young people under the age of 18 (as of 2013).

Young people are encouraged and introduced to the sport from an early age. There is a seamless connection to the youth or junior teams. In addition to the men's teams, there are also women's teams and also for older people the opportunity to continue training and to play into old age.

Cooperations, partnerships and sponsors

The association maintains numerous collaborations and partnerships with schools and other educational institutions. As such, they are recognized by the Badischer Sportbund and are funded accordingly with state funds. These are, for example, conventional sports clubs in grammar schools or secondary schools or social projects that promote the integration of foreign or young people with learning disabilities.

The association lives on the one hand from the financial support of long-term partners who, for example, place advertisements, from local sports houses that donate jerseys or balls and from the club's own " Förderverein Rugby in Neuneheim eV", which was founded on October 15, 2001. Currently, the income from borrowed funds is higher than the income from own funds. In addition, the club is supported by grants from the public sector, the Badischer Sportbund and the Heidelberg Sports District.

media

The club magazine "Drop" appears every six months at the beginning of the first and second round. In addition, the club's internal camera team is on site for both home and return matches in order to prepare important information afterwards in condensed form and then to pass it on to all those interested in the club. There are often topic-specific flyers or posters for current events.
