history
The "Student Council Rugby" of TSV Handschuhsheim was founded on July 27, 1949 in the inn "Zum Ritter" in the Heidelberg district of Handschuhsheim. The first game was played on September 25, 1949 against Heidelberger TV and ended with a 19: 8 win for Handschuhsheim. In the 1950s, the team established itself and moved into the final of the German championship four times. On May 19, 1957, TSV managed to win the only German championship in the club's history with a 6-3 victory over SC Elite Hannover. On September 23, 1956, the rugby field on Neckarfeld, which is today the training ground of the rugby department, was inaugurated with a game against Viktoria Hannover. The changing room was expanded and topped up in the early 1960s, so that a clubhouse with a commercial operation was created. The first team was also one of the best rugby teams in Germany in the 1960s. During this period, TSV established several youth teams that took part in matches in Baden-Württemberg. This youth work then bore fruit in the 1970s when TSV Handschuhsheim celebrated one of its most successful years in sport in 1978: it managed to win the runner-up championship and the runner-up cup. Due to an overaged team, TSV rose several times from the 1st Bundesliga in the 1980s. In response to this, the focus was again on youth work, which led to the first German school and youth championship titles in the 1990s. Since the late 1990s, the team has established itself in the 1st Bundesliga.

Trivia
The rugby team is called "The Lions". The name refers to the traditional story of the "Hensemer Löb": When Handschuhsheim was still a pure farming village, one day the farmers heard a threatening noise in their fields that sounded like the roar of a lion. That could only be a big cat that escaped from the Heidelberg zoo. The farmers then went out armed with flails and scythes to catch the lion. But they were amazed when the alleged lion's roar turned out to be the signal from the first steam tug (1878) on the Neckar, which returned the joyful greeting of the amazed residents with its ship's horn. Since then, the residents of Handschuhsheim have been called "the lions".
The rugby team was given an unofficial fifth stanza of the "anthem" Handschuhsheim, (praise to Handschuhsheim):
“In Handschuhsheim, you also play rugby,
probably the most beautiful sport.
The Hendsmer lions give everything
for their beloved place.
Cheerful even after defeats,
have friends all over the world,
the team fights for victory and joy
and for honor, not for money! "
