Manuel Wilhelm (born December 15, 1980 in Heidelberg ) is a former German rugby union player and currently sports director and chairman of the board (sport) of the German Rugby Association .

Life

Wilhelm, whose father comes from Ghana , has been playing rugby since he was six . In the Bundesliga , he debuted with the RG Heidelberg , later changed but for a season for local rivals SC Neuenheim before 2001 RG Heidelberg returned, where he ended his playing career in 2015. After his military service , he was also in the squad of the Spanish first division CAU Valencia active .

His successes include winning the German rugby championship twice in 2006 and 2007, winning the 2004 cup and seven national championship titles in Olympic 7-a-side rugby between 1998 and 2010, all of which he won as a player in RG Heidelberg. In addition, Wilhelm won the 2003 German University Championship with the University of Mannheim . In addition to his work as a club player, Wilhelm also played for the German national team from 2003 to 2014 , with which he won the European Nations Cup in Division II in 2008 . He is also a co-initiator of the well-known beach rugby club Romantics BRFC and co-founder of the international 7-a-side rugby tournament Oktoberfest Sevens , which has been held every year in Munich's Olympic Stadium since 2017 .

In 2010, Wilhelm worked for one season with the Queensland Reds' Australian super rugby franchise .

Within the German Rugby Association , Wilhelm was manager and competitive sports advisor on the staff of the German 7-man national team from 2012 to 2016 . As sports director of the German Rugby Association, Wilhelm has been responsible for all competitive sports in Germany since January 2017. In January 2020, he was appointed chairman of the board.
