Entry of the German and Ugandan teams, 2017

The Oktoberfest Sevens is an international invitation tournament for national teams in Olympic sevens rugby . It takes place in the Olympiastadion in Munich at the time of the Oktoberfest .

The tournament first took place from September 29-30, 2017 and was won by Australia . The second time it was held from September 21 to 22, 2019, the winner was South Africa .

history

Since 1987 there has been an amateur tournament held by the Munich RFC under the same name, which has had the addition of Classics since 2017 . The new tournament comes from the idea of former RG Heidelberg players to organize an international rugby tournament of seven in Germany . The former national player Mathias Entenman, who was already on the boards of PayPal and Ebay , is the organizer of the tournament. The aim of hosting the new tournament is to become part of the World Series . In addition to the German national team , the reigning Olympic champions Fiji and World Series winners South Africa also took part in the first event in 2017 . The twelve teams initially competed in three groups of four teams each. The German team failed in the quarter-finals against England . The winner of the tournament was Australia with a 40-7 win over Fiji.

In spring 2018 the Oktoberfest Sevens were canceled for the current year. The reason was the focus of the resources on the application for the World Series. Although the application ended unsuccessfully, it was announced at the end of the year that the tournament would continue to be held until 2022. The city of Munich supports the use of the Olympic Stadium by the Olympic sport financially.
