Sardinia Radio Telescope
The Sardinia Radio Telescope is a radio telescope near San Basilio in the province of Sud Sardegna in Sardinia ( Italy ), which was completed in August 2012.
The main mirror of the telescope has a diameter of 64 meters and is therefore the third largest radio telescope in Europe after the Effelsberg radio telescope (100 meters) and the Jodrell Bank radio observatory (76 meters) in England. The telescope was planned and built by MT Mechatronics GmbH. The client and responsible for the operation of the system is the Istituto di Radioastronomia di Bologna . The Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) and the Istituto Nazionale per l'Astrofisica (INAF) are also involved in the project . It participates in the European VLBI Network under EVN Code Sr and significantly improves the data situation in the north-south direction through longer baselines and an extended frequency range. The active surface panels have a high precision with a deviation of 350 μm and can be adapted with actuators.
Technical specifications:
- 64 meter primary mirror
- 7.9 meter secondary mirror
- Gregorian arrangement
- Active optics with 1116 actuators
- Frequency range from 300 MHz to 100 GHz
