The División de Honor de Rugby is the highest Spanish rugby union league for club teams, and is subject to the Spanish rugby umbrella organization Federación Española de Rugby . The league was founded in 1952, but no competition was held between 1955 and 1969. In 1979 the championship was divided into four groups, but the final competition between the group winners was canceled, which is why there were officially four winners this season.
The league currently consists of twelve teams who play the champions in a round trip. There are four points for a win and two points for a draw. If a game is lost with a difference of seven or less points or if a team achieves at least four attempts , there is a bonus point. The last two climb into the two-tier División de Honor B from. The Spanish champion is occasionally invited to the European Challenge Cup , but has no fixed place.
