The Estadio Nacional Universidad Complutense , also known as Campo Central de la Ciudad Universitaria or simply El Central , is a rugby stadium in the Spanish capital, Madrid . The venue, located on the main campus of the Complutense University of Madrid , was inaugurated on October 12, 1943. The stadium is the home of the Spanish national rugby union team and the clubs CD Arquitectura and CR Cisneros .

history

The planning for the construction of the Ciudad Universitaria ( Spanish for "university town"), and thus also the rugby stadium, began on May 17, 1927, when the then King Alfonso XIII. issued the building contract by decree. However, I delayed the completion of the complex, originally expected in 1936, due to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War . The university campus itself , which is currently under construction, was an important site of the battle for Madrid in November 1936 , and the front line ran across the campus during the major period of the siege of the city by Francisco Franco's troops . Many of the almost completed structures were destroyed or badly damaged. The ceremonial opening of the sports facilities and the rugby stadium did not take place until October 12, 1943, on the Spanish national holiday . The venue's architects were Luis Lacasa Navarro (1899–1966), who built the Spanish pavilion at the World Exhibition in Paris together with Josep Lluís Sert , Javier Barroso Sánchez-Guerra and the well-known civil engineer Eduardo Torroja Miret .

In addition to various university sports clubs, the Spanish national team began using the stadium as a home from 1954. Since then, numerous renowned selections have been guests at the Estadio Nacional to meet the Iberian team. For example , on November 20, 1982 the Spaniards played against the New Zealand Māori , in November 1989 the second national team of Australia was a guest, with players like John Eales , Jason Little, David Nucifora or David Knox, who would win the World Cup a little later . In January 1992 France XV , France's second team with rugby legend Philippe Sella , played at the Estadio Nacional. On October 24, 1992, Argentina met Spain in a friendly, the match ended with an unexpectedly close 34:43 in favor of the South Americans. In the course of qualifying for the 1995 World Cup , the Spaniards played against the newly crowned Five Nations winner Wales . On November 1, 2001, the Spaniards had the honor of facing the Wallabies in a friendly , the 10:92 is their biggest defeat to date.
