The Postal top mountain is the residue of an unknown dialed medieval hilltop castle that once stood on and around the peak of the peak mountain. The Burgstall is located west of the village of Großengsee in the municipality of Simmelsdorf in the district of Nürnberger Land in Bavaria , Germany . To this day, nothing more is known about this small castle complex, neither who built it, who sat on it or why it was destroyed. Today only a ring moat around the mountain top remains of the object, which is protected as a ground monument .

Geographical location

The site of the former castle is in the center of the Franconian Alb low mountain range , about 582  m above sea level. NN height on the summit of the Spitzenberg, a small mountain ridge stretching from north to south. The completely forested mountain only drops steeply to the south and east about 40 meters in altitude and then turns into gently sloping meadow slopes or into neighboring rising mountain hills. To the west and north, the mountain slopes drop only moderately steeply, at some distance the terrain rises to the adjoining mountain peaks, some of which are over 600  m above sea level. Reach NN , again, and form a small ridge that extends from north to east.

The Burgstall is located about 950 meters west of the center of Großengsee or 1150 meters northeast of Winterstein. The local connecting road LAU 3 runs between Winterstein and Großengsee immediately southeast of the Burgberg.

There are other former medieval castles in the vicinity: The Winterstein castle ruins of the same name are only about a kilometer southwest of Winterstein . In the east there is another castle stable in the village of Großengsee, which was later built over by a manor house and on which there is now a small castle . Another castle stable is also just over a kilometer away from the Spitzenberg near Sankt Helena on the Burgstuhl. A little further away in the north are the castles Strahlfels and Wildenfels , to which there was also visual contact, as well as Hiltpoltstein Castle and Spies Castle in the east.

description

The top mountain (picture 1) has a natural hill on its summit, which is interspersed with larger rocks (cover picture, picture 2, 3 and 5) and is crowned by a small rock tower. This rock tower (Fig. 4) rises about two meters above the level surface of the hill, which is only a few meters small, and drops vertically about 15 meters on its east side. The only sign of development on the hill that is still visible today is a small terrace on its northern slope.

A ring moat was built around the foot of the castle hill as protection against an attack . This ditch stretches from the south side of the rock tower to the north side of the hill, but without reconnecting to the rock tower that protected the entire east side of the castle. This is probably where the earlier entrance to the castle was also located (Fig. 5).

Current condition

Today the area of the former castle is densely overgrown by high forest, only the ring moat has survived. Today there is no signposted route to the freely accessible Burgstall.

The ground monument registered by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments as "Medieval Castle Stables" has the monument number D-5-6334-0046.
