The Burgstall Hienberg was a presumably high medieval aristocratic castle , which was located on the Hienberg above the small hamlet Rampertshof in the municipality of Simmelsdorf in the Middle Franconian district of Nürnberger Land in Bavaria , Germany . The hilltop castle is almost completely gone today, only very few remains are evidence of it.

Geographical location

View of the Hienberg from the north-west, the location of the castle is roughly in the middle of the two highest points

The castle stable of the Hangburg was on the western border of the Hersbrucker Alb , part of the Franconian Alb , on the western slope of 550  m above sea level. NN high Hienberg . The Hienberg extends from north-northeast to south-southwest and is bordered on its west side by the Schnaittach and on the east side by the valley of the Osternoher Bach. The former castle complex was located in the immediate vicinity of the route of the A 9 , about 820 meters east of the Simmelsdorf-Hüttenbach stop of the Schnaittachtalbahn , or about 26 kilometers northeast of Nuremberg at about 500 meters above sea level and thus 200 meters above the valley.

There are other former medieval castles in the vicinity, a few kilometers southeast of the ruins of Osternohe above the village of the same name, and Hohenstein Castle a little further . Immediately to the north and west are former mansions in Diepoltsdorf and Simmelsdorf. To the south-south-west are the Alter Rothenberg Castle Stables and the Rothenberg Fortress above the Schnaittach market .

history

View of the castle area with the western rock tower

There is still no documentary mention of the former castle on the Hienberg , and the original name of the castle or its builder are completely unknown. In a mention in the opportunity of the landscape mitsampt den furthen und helten darinnen , a site survey of the imperial city of Nuremberg before the Landshut War of Succession of 1504/05, it says: "Item Rampertstorff is Normbergisch and a seat". However, it is not certain whether this seat is identical to the Burgstall on the Hienberg.

Pottery, made in the area of the castle stables, date the plant in the period between the 13th and 14th centuries, an iron spiked spur , long among others iron finds such as a 11 centimeter knife blade and several ungulates and other nails done could, however, date from the 11th or 12th century. It is also unclear whether the construction of the castle was even completed; an incomplete ditch could indicate that the construction work was abandoned. The task of the castle, which was built in a rather unfavorable defensive position, could have been the monitoring of an old road that connected the Schnaittach valley via the Hienberg with the valley of the Osternoher Bach and at the height probably had a branch to the north. Only a few meters below the castle location, a ravine fan with at least six paths stretches up the Hienberg, and then passes the former castle in its immediate vicinity.

Today the place of the abandoned castle is densely covered with forest, only a few remains of the wall and a moat have survived. The Burgstall, which is freely accessible at all times, can be reached by a hiking trail from Rampertshof over the western flank of the Hienberg.

The ground monument registered by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments as "Medieval Castle Stables " has the monument number D-5-6434-0130.
