Hersbrucker Alb

The Hersbrucker Alb - also known as Hersbrucker Schweiz or Pegnitz-Alb - is the northeastern part of the Franconian Alb near Hersbruck . It is crossed by the Pegnitz and its tributaries.

location

In the west, the Hersbrucker Alb extends to the Schnaittach valley . It is limited by Lauf an der Pegnitz and Hiltpoltstein in the west, Betzenstein in the north, Auerbach and Sulzbach-Rosenberg in the east and Alfeld in the south. Most of it is in Middle Franconia and the Upper Palatinate , with a small part in Upper Franconia .

The Hersbrucker Alb includes the Weißjuratafel made of hard, brittle and karstified mass limestone and reef limestone and the Franconian dolomite, including their recent editions. Numerous caves and a striking rocky landscape gave the area the name "Hersbrucker Schweiz " (formerly "Nürnberger Schweiz"). The Hersbrucker Alb is part of the Northern Franconian Jura climbing area . The name "Alb" was derived from the Latin expression montes albi (white mountains). More likely, however, the term Alb is an old Celtic name and means 'mountain pasture'.

The Ossinger 651.1  m above sea level. NN forms the highest point of the Hersbrucker Alb.
