The Glatzenstein is 572  m above sea level. NN high mountain of the Franconian Alb from Jura limestone . It is mainly in the municipality of Neunkirchen am Sand , parts of it belong to Kirchensittenbach and Schnaittach in the district of Nürnberger Land .

Geographical location

The heavily forested Glatzenstein is located in Hersbrucker Schweiz , the part of the Franconian Alb named after Hersbruck , and belongs to the Franconian Switzerland-Veldenstein Forest Nature Park .

The mountain top of the Glatzenstein lies around 500 meters north of Weißenbach and around 1 kilometer northeast of Kersbach , both parts of the municipality of Neunkirchen. The municipality of Kirchensittenbach, whose district Oberkrumbach is about 1.5 kilometers east of the mountain, stretches right up to the summit . The municipality of Schnaittach, whose district Siegersdorf is around 1 kilometer north of the mountain, extends to the north flank of the mountain .

The small Kersbach flows as an eastern Schnaittach tributary in a north-east-south-west direction west of the Glatzenstein.

In good weather conditions, the Glatzenstein offers a wonderful view of the Nuremberg region. This makes it a popular hiking destination in the spring, autumn and summer months.

The massive limestone of the mountain currently contains 34 climbing routes, some of which have been renovated. The wall height is over 30 meters in places. The levels of difficulty according to the UIAA scale range from 4 to 9. Getting off at the highest point and climbing new routes for the first time is not permitted.

Archaeological finds

The Glatzenstein Cave is located directly below the viewing rock at the highest point ( cave register Fränkische Alb , D 2), which was probably used in prehistoric times . Some ancient shards were found there, from which a clay spoon could be reconstructed, whose origin dates back to around 500 BC. Was determined.

To this Aussichtsfelsen a semicircular ring ditch is pre- and early historic time position. Presumably from there the fortress Rothenberg on the opposite Rothenberg was shelled.
