The Franconian Alb cave cadastre (HFA) is a private, association-independent cave cadastre . In the HFA (as of December 31, 2013), 3675 caves in the Franconian Alb are registered and documented.

The task of the HFA is the systematic collection of information about caves and related karst phenomena in the Franconian Alb area. The data includes the name of the cave, description, exact location, size, plans and photos of the objects. These data form the basis for scientific and local history work. In addition to the documentation of caves, archaeological , paleontological , geological and biological observations are also archived .

Objects are included in the cadastre that are located in the rock layers of Dogger (iron sandstone), Malm or chalk and meet the following criteria:

  • Caves with a total passage length of five meters or more
  • Cave ruins, rock gates and large abrises
  • Natural cavities with a total passage length of less than five meters
  • Artificial cavities (e.g. silver sand caves, rock cellars, cave dwelling, tunnels) under certain conditions

The work area includes the Franconian Alb with an area of ​​around 9086 square kilometers. For a better overview, the total area was divided into twelve karst areas according to morphological and hydrological aspects, which are designated with the letters A – M.

The HFA is not open to the public. Detailed information from the Franconian Alb cave cadastre is only given to persons, associations or institutions that can prove a legitimate interest . Cave plans and information are subject to copyright law. Information about caves is only given to private individuals in exceptional cases.
