history
Until the 18th century
The village of Altenveldorf was the forerunner settlement of the city of Velburg, which was built between 1231 and 1285. The former Velburg Castle was the starting point for the re-establishment. The exact origins of the castle are not known, it was first mentioned in 1129. Lords of the castle were the Counts of Velburg until 1217, including the Austrian line of Counts von Clamm ( Lords of Perg and Machland ). Thereafter, between 1271 and 1452, there was changing rule over the castle and the settlement area of Velburg.
In 1410, the Velburg market was granted city rights; The construction of the city fortifications should have started around this time. Of the original 13 towers of the curtain wall, only two are still standing, the north tower and the so-called Kapsenturm. In 1394 a schoolmaster was first mentioned in Velburg. In 1410 there was the first big fire in Velburg.
In 1505 Velburg was assigned to the newly formed Principality of Pfalz-Neuburg . Two years later, the knight Georg Wisbeck received Velburg as a gift for his services. In 1540, 1553 and 1574 there were three more major fires, and the plague raged three times in Velburg: 1564, 1574 and 1586.
In 1574 the Wispeck family died out and Velburg fell back to Pfalz-Neuburg. In the same year the first parish was founded, until then Velburg had belonged to the parish of Oberweiling. The originally single-nave parish church was built in the 15th century. A north aisle was added in 1520 and converted into a three-aisled church between 1717 and 1721 by adding the south aisle.
During the Thirty Years' War , Velburg was occupied by Swedish troops under Colonel Claus Hastver on December 1, 1633 as part of the planned occupation of the Upper Palatinate by the Swedish general Bernhard von Sachsen-Weimar . The place was on the supply route from Nuremberg to Regensburg and therefore had to be secured for the Swedes during the battles for Regensburg (1632–1634) .
The last outbreak of the plague in Velburg occurred in 1713.
19th century
In 1803 a rent office (later tax office) was established and in 1807/08 Joseph Ziegler opened the first pharmacy in Velburg. In 1808 there was a reallocation of the districts in Bavaria, which were named after rivers. Velburg belonged to the Regenkreis, named after the Regen river . In 1838 the rain district was renamed the Upper Palatinate administrative region . A mail and transport service was set up in 1851 and in 1862 Velburg was given a district office . The town hall was rebuilt between 1863 and 1865 and the land surveying office was subsequently built in 1866. 18 years after its establishment, the district office was dissolved again in 1880. The König Otto stalactite cave was discovered in 1895.
20th century
A local telephone network was set up in 1907 and a nurses' home in 1921. In 1929 the surveying office was dissolved, and in 1932 the tax office (rent office).
With the dissolution of the Parsberg district on July 1, 1972, Velburg was included in the enlarged Neumarkt district in the Upper Palatinate.
Incorporations
On October 1, 1970, the municipalities of Geroldsee , Griffenwang , Lutzmannstein and Pielenhofen , which had been relocated in 1951 and were therefore only formally independent , were incorporated. Reichertswinn was added on April 1, 1971. Deusmauer, Lengenfeld, Mantlach bei Velburg, Oberweiling and Prönsdorf as well as parts of the area of Ronsolden followed on January 1, 1972. Parts of the dissolved municipality of Ransbach were added on July 1, 1972.
On May 1, 1978, Günching and parts of the dissolved municipality of Oberwiesenacker were finally incorporated.
The city grew through the incorporation to a total area of 176 km² with 4200 inhabitants.
Population development
Between 1988 and 2018, the city grew from 4,515 to 5,312 by 797 inhabitants or 17.7%.
