History of the castle
The hilltop castle was built in the 12th century by the lords of Adelburg and was an imperial fiefdom of the Staufers . In 1180 it was mentioned as de Adelenburg . In 1246 it fell back to the empire and in the following years was often an object of trade and exchange. Other castle owners were the Wittelsbachers and the lords of Parsberg . From 1413 to 1584 the complex was destroyed several times.
The three-part complex consisted of a core castle and two outer castles . Its five-meter-high and 1.45-meter-thick curtain wall, made of the humpback cubes common in the 12th century, is still partially preserved. According to a legend, an underground tunnel from Klapfenberg and Oberweiling is said to lead under the Schwarzen Laaber to the Adelsburg because people in the villages were able to seek protection from troops passing by at the castle.
