Karl-Heinz Kago (formerly Karl-Heinz Gonschorowski ; born September 26, 1941 in Stendal ) is a German stove manufacturer and founder of the Kago company .

Life

Gonschorowski grew up as an orphan with his grandmother in Stendal and trained as a factory chimney bricklayer. In 1968 he fled from what was then the GDR to the Federal Republic of Germany and in 1972, together with an employee, founded his furnace construction company in Postbauer-Heng near Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate , which within a few years became a large company with at times over 2000 employees. In the late 1980s, he took his company's name as a family name. In 2006 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the university in Banská Bystrica , Slovakia .

Kago is married to Lucie Kago, a French native of Metz . Her son Pierre was managing director of the family business from 2006 to 2010.

Kago owned 72 houses in Postbauer-Heng and lived in a villa, the architecture of which was supposed to be reminiscent of a French Loire castle. He went out for trips in four and six-horse carriages and had a private zoo ; He took over the financing of the redesign of the market place, which was necessary to maintain the market dignity , renovated and maintained the free local swimming pool. He has a criminal record for misuse of titles, forgery of documents and tax evasion. In December 2007 the passionate hunter was sentenced to one and a half years probation for violating the War Weapons Control Act. According to media reports from the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Karl-Heinz Kago was investigated for employing illegal workers . In mid-January 2009, more than a hundred officials searched the company and private rooms of Karl-Heinz and Pierre Kago, managing directors of Kago-Kamine-Kachelofen GmbH. The two are accused of not having properly paid social security contributions for employees.

Kago had to file for bankruptcy in 2010. The company was taken over by other investors and continued. The castle-like villa in Postbauer-Heng was for sale at Sotheby’s , but could not be sold at first. In 2016 it was auctioned for 5 million euros. After the buyer, a real estate agent from Munich, has not paid, the "Kago-Schloss" should come under the hammer again. A date has not yet been set.

The entrepreneur came into conflict with the law several times, for example because of forgery of documents, misuse of titles and tax evasion. In December 2007 the Neumarkt District Court sentenced him to a suspended sentence for violating the War Weapons Control Act; Tax investigators had found war equipment in a castle search. In January 2012, Kago and his adopted son Pierre Kago were charged with undeclared work and social fraud. According to the indictment, Kago is said to have employed illegal workers - mainly from Eastern Europe - in his private zoo and the woodworks for years. He received a suspended sentence and a fine of 7,200 euros.

The zoo is now closed.
